Specialtech Closed?

I noticed that the Specialtech forums have been down today so I just tried to go on the main shop site but am greeted with this message:

"The store is closed

It is with a heavy heart and much regret that I have to inform you that Specialtech is now closed.
The company has been placed into voluntary liquidation. All outstanding orders have been sent or refunded.

Thank you to everyone for your support over the years, it has been a pleasure to serve the community. See you on the other side!
Stephen Probert"

This is such a shame if this is true, anyone know any more about it?

This is a real shock, nobody I know saw this coming. It is really sad to see them go.

This deserves a proper write up, but I will link it to this thread.

Sad times :(
I've ordered a fair bit of stuff from them myself and never had issues either. I won my H100 on their forums a couple of years back as well.

At least they had the common decency to provide an explanation to their customers, unlike what happened with FrozenCPU. :nutkick:

I feel like custom water-cooling is becoming a dying art, yet it shouldn't have to be. It's a sad day indeed when specialty shops like this shutter it's doors.

Oh bugger, I used them for almost all of my cooling gear, it was nice to support a ma and pa business. I have wondered of late though why they haven't had much stock in, and what they did have there wasn't much of it.

It's a sad shame.

Devastated they were good friends and they helped Mayhems be what we are today.

Realy realy has hit hard this one :(

RIP ST, Steve and Ayd you were one of a kind. I owe them a lot.

Wow, first FCPU and now this. At this rate, three more years we will be buying parts from auto parts stores.

Do you think this has to do with the competition of multinationals and mega sites like Amazon etc? I've seen a lot of similar stories with local bike shops etc who can't compete with the pricing of online stores like Wiggle.

Customers obviously want the best price but we really need to support local retailers. It's hard because they have to factor in high rents for street frontage, limited stock on hand that is quickly superseeded and people who tend to use them heaps for advice but then go buy online (the worst kind of customer)

I've bought from Amazon and yeah it was 25% cheaper but took weeks to arrive (in Australia)

It's a sad reality of globalisation when we think for example the local hardware store is all but gone - taking all the knowledge that goes with it. We now head to Bunnings/ Home Depot, (insert the name of your big chain warehouse) and the people on the floor really only know and regurgitated whatever's on the label of the product you're buying. Not saying that they're all like that but we're losing so much knowledge.

I understand SpecialTech was an online shop but it's the same principle. Next time you're tempted by saving a couple of dollars by shopping with the big players just think of supporting a local who obviously provided awesome support and advice.

Small business is a hard and often cruel world. The good ones need all the help they can get from us.

They had all those little extra parts as well, not good to see. I have had emails off of them full of advise etc making it worth supporting them.

I think its more CLC being sold than anything. It's Corsair's fault ;). Even look at this site, most of the time Tom is running an AIO cooler. It seems like ages since we have seen him put a custom loop on anything. It's not just here, its like that everywhere. Custom water is just not as in demand as it used to be. I guess its just progress, and things change.

I put it down to ridiculous pricing of fittings more than blocks and other WC parts.

Very easy to spend as much as a high end GPU on fittings alone. But then again, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. There could be a different issue completely leading to the closure of Specialtech.

That's true. I would love to be a fly on the wall to find out if the two store closings were somehow connected. Slow sales leading to each meeting their own end or what the real reason was. I seen the pictures of FCPU, but I curious as to what fueled the start of that indecent.
