sound proofing room

hey guys

as u might know, im about to have a louder sound system than i currently have in my room, so i need something to help me soundproof my room.

my room forms a square, of the 2 walls that have "access" to the outside wall, 1 wall has been completely redone to have a big double glazed window + double glazed door, and the other is a brick wall with a small single glazed window.

both those walls/windows have a heavy curtain which is double lined (those really heavy anti-sun curtains), and the other 2 walls, one is solid brick with no holes and the last wall has 2 doors (neither im really worried about).

ne ideas in what i can do to soundproof that room even more?

EDIT: no seriously, wtf? why? are you killing people in there? :|

maybe :P

nah, ive got shi**y neighbors.

ive had the police called on me 7 times, its getting so annoying that me and the copper are on first name basis and i know how many freakin sugars he likes in his coffee...

Urgh, well u can follow the trail of sound studios - see if u can get u`r hands on some of those sound tile things.

Cheap solution used to be to use those egg platter squares, they come about a foot square. (cept u need to buy loads of eggs I guess)

or have a good friend at local supermarket :P

im just worried about this window...thats the only thing thats stopping me :/

bah - im going to get a sound level meter (about £50 tops) and make sure she has the legal right to call in the coppers

If the fuzz are having to investigate such issues brought up by neighbors, they should have a meter. If that`s the case call u`r buddy over for a coffee, telling him u`r "deeply concerned and would like to try and do something active about it" - and can u bring u`r meter with u :p

yea, but i hate to be made to look like the fool.

so if my "buddy" comes over with the meter, and im to be made the fool by actually having the thing on too loud........well - u can see the embarrasement.

does anyone know the noise law in the UK?

i know theres an xx dB limit after xx time in the evenin...

cybermaniac, i know exactly how you feel, i have the same kind of people living next to me.....bah.....

the advice i've got from a friendly policeman, is to record EVERY complaints made, ie, the time, date, reason.

then, get a sound level meter that trips out at (forgotten what db....think you have to check with your local council.....), have ALL your sound meter documents copied, and keep a file of all complaints since you had sound meter installed.

get someone from your local council(environment department, i think) to come over, and show him you've installed this and that, and show him it does work, and ask him to bring his own sound meter so everything match up.

if everything works and matchs up, and you have a record of it, then your friendly next door will be in a position where you can sue their arse off.

but first thing you have to do after you've installed your sound meter and had someone from council to check, is to go over to your neighbors and tell them you've had it checked out.

so if things go nasty, all the evidence in court will be in your favour.

hope that helps

PS, i did exactly that, and gave a copy of all letters and document to my next door, and even asked my local council to pay a visit to them.......they've been very friendly ever since!

any idea what kind of sound level meter i should be looking at?

data logger kind i assume?

i'll check for ya.

but its not one that logs any info tho.......its one of those that stops all power to your speakers, so for example, the dB in your area is 70, you set your meter to 70dB, if the noise level go over 70dB, your speakers will suddenly stop for a few senconds, then it goes back to normal, and stops again if noise goes over 70dB.

its annoying, and you have to get used to it, but it works!

it was about 6-7 years ago since mine was fitted, it cost A LOT of money back then, something like 500-600 quid, and you are not allowed to fit them yourself, you have get people thats certified for fitting it, as it has a Mic/sound detector to measure the noise level.

it 'should' be cheaper now....but i'll check which company mine was from.

Would it be your big bass or just how loud it is?

What speakers you have btw?

i'll be having loud music (maybe big bass later on), but speakers wise its gonna be 100w dealies.

i'll be having:

Wharfedale DIAMOND 9.1 fronts

Mordaunt Short 903i AVANT rears

Mordaunt Short 905i center

and maybe at a later date Mordaunt Short MS 409 sub.

those will be hooked to a Pioneer VSX-1016V-S

I would just get a meter and then check what the highest Db's you can have in your area. Then just make sure that you dont go aboce the max Db. Kepp it like 1 or 2 under and just

off your neigbors and laugh in their face when they try to call the cops and say its not above the max Db.

thats what i was planning to do.

hmmmmmmm time to call in a few favours and ask what the Max dB is around my area.

Let`s also be brutally honest with ourselves here.

Do u know u`rself that the sound is annoying to every1 else outside u`r room ?

I mean, I like to play Hendrix, SoundGarden, Wolfmother, AudioSlave @ extremely loud volumes - but I do take into account my surroundings.

The room I vibrate the foundations in doesn`t have any neighbors next to it, so that can help, but even I know that my 5.1 can bass it`s way through rooms at points in time. But at select times of the day during the week (usually when I`ve just finished work and I`m prepping some food or something) I think eff it, and crank it up. But even then it`s not for hours on end or anything... well not in all cases. I`ll act up a bit in the summer prehaps when after the stuff is done I`ll stay outside for a bit.

U sure u`r not just acting up for the sake of it ? (just to get that out of the way)

for me, i rarely crank it up as such, and i'll be playing a viriety of songs from classical rock to techno and trance. Unfortunatly these are the kind of neighbors that dislike anything. Honestly.

So i'm just trying to cover myself on this one just so she can't moan. (unfortunatly shes on of these BNP people who are just freakin nazis).

She also dislikes me because im Brasilian by birth lol.

Well maybe turn it up slightly, go stand outside your door (nearly the same distance ur neighbours will be minus the gaps between the door and walls as this will allow some sound through) then judge it yourself - is it too loud or not? All that travels through my walls is the bass but thats coz i have it high for thrashing to those heavy bass hardcore tracks :)

at least your neighbor doesnt threaten to beat you up with a baseball bat for parking my own car in front of my own house.
