Some build advice for 2.5k ~ build

Hi everyone,

I am going to be ordering a PC very soon (end of the week hopefully) and need some help making sure I picked out the right parts, I have gone through the list and everything looks compatible to me and fine, just wanted a second pair of eyes to double check and also if any of you have any suggestions as well for the build. The rig will mainly be used for gaming on a 1920 x 1080 monitor @ 120Hz and other than that it using it for programming / testing programs.

Here is the build, prices from overclockers.co.uk and will most likely be ordering from there.

Intel i7 2700K
Kingston HyperX Beast 2 x 8Gb @ 2400Mhz
Asus Maximus V Formula Z77
2 x MSI HD7970 Lightning boosted edition
Seasonic X-Series 1050W PSU
Asus Xonar Essence ST
BitFenix Shinobi XL full tower
Corsair Hydro H100i
Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB
2 x Samsung 840 Basic 120GB SSD's
6 x Corsair SP120 fans (to replace rest in case)
IC Diamond 24-Carat thermal compound
3 x NZXT Sleeved sata cables

Just want to make sure this is all compatible

Also would I be able to use this with the Seasonic Power Supply or does it really need to be the AX1200

Also on the description of the motherboard, it says it has 2 CPU fan connectors, 3 Chassis connectors and 3 optional connectors, is there a difference between the chassis and the optional connectors?

Also I might not be willing to change my mind to a lot of the suggestions if all this works well together even though there are setups out there that would be bit better.

Total comes to £2400, but it can go up by an extra £200 or so

Thankyou!

Generally looks okay.
Why are you getting the 2700k instead of the 3770k though?

And also, you don't have a PCI slot on the motherboard for the soundcard. You need to get the Essence STX instead.

I would rethink getting a small SSD and a Raptor. You would be better served by a larger SSD for the games and a green HDD for general storage. Ultimately you would be better off again learning to RAMdisk!

Just to let you know that although you have a healthy budget for this gaming rig the i7 won't offer you a noticeable performance increase above the i5 and neither will 16gb of 2400MHz RAM over 8gb of 1866MHz.

I second James' points too.

CPU fan connectors, Chassis connectors and optional fan connectors don't differ much, if at all. Typically 3 or 4 pin. It is mostly for easy labelling and controlling in BIOS.

Would the graphics cards need to be on the bottom 2 slots since it looks like there would be too much of a gap between the first 2 slots.

Also was thinking of the 2700k over the 3770k since I heard it generally overclocks a bit better? Or is worth just getting the 3770k?

Ty for help far!

I don't really have anything on my hard drive though, other than games and 1 SSD wouldn't be enough, so I thought I would go in between with the Raptor, also only reason I picked i7 over i5 is because I will be doing some streaming with the PC while playing League of Legends and Hyper threading seemed to help out on that point, I will take the RAM into account though, thankyou.

Well it depends on how many games you want to have installed at the same time. You've spend around £400 on SSDs and the Raptor there and you could get a 500GB SSD for £325. I would expect that to be enough space for 99% of people although you might be different!

If you intend on multi-tasking whilst intensively gaming then the i7 is a sensible choice. Equally with this budget getting slightly on the high side of the requirements for RAM isn't a bad thing (16gb 1866 or 2133) is cool.

Sandy vs Ivy bridge overclocking is a bit of a mute point really. The heat build up does get you a slightly lower overclock with Ivy but Ivy is more powerful for the same speed so it ends up about equal. Ivy has other better functions though such as native PCIe3 support, usb3 support and a better memory controller.

I use roughly 700GB of space from games so looking at it, I could get 4 250GB HDD's and run them in RAID 0 and that should be enough for me, and if I ever need more then I can move some stuff onto an external or something or just remove it while not using it

700gb of games? Damn... Lol

Better off getting like a 1-2tb hard drive, and then a big ssd for your os and main programs and your favorite games, everything else on the HDD
