Solid Ikea Desk Recommendations

Hi,

I've had one of the cheap Ikea desks for a while now but it's not very stable and hate the way it shakes my monitors if I slightly bump it. I think the top is too light. I'm thinking about getting another one from Ikea, can anyone recommend a solid one that feels very stable on a carpet before I take a wasted journey?

I would recommend you to find local carpenter and get custom desk built. You can find good deals on plywood, or some other material in whatever color you like. It will cost the same or less. And you can tailor it to your needs, and not try to fit existing desk into your space.

I use a kitchen worktop, runs the length of the wall and accommodates my wife's and my setups zero screen shake, looks great and very sturdy.
Length of 2x2 on the wall for support with a leg each end and 1 in the middle taken from a previous desk, cabling comes up via holes drilled in discrete spots.

Best thing I ever did was go from a desk to a heavy solid oak kitchen table. Super solid with no monitor shake.

It is a lot bigger than it looks in the pic but they also do bigger desks too.

As nice as that desk is in your link since he's after an IKEA desk I would assume he's after something on the cheaper side.

If you are settled where you live get an oak desk. I have one from OFL and it's the most solid desk I have ever had. It's a proper "home" and I feel at home when I am sat at it. The top is 1" thick white oak and it's literally bullet proof. It needs to be with me working on it all of the time lol.

Yeah exactly. Looking for something 100 quid mark if possible. A kitchen unit top may still be doable but I'm not 100% sure I won't move the location of it in the future.

Have you looked on FB marketplace? well worth a look IMO, even if you don't have an account (just set up a bogus one so you can get access).

i use and old solid Oak Dinning Table, 6FT x 3FT , that i got from a 2nd hand shop, solid as a rock and plenty of space. I only paid £10 as well. Just needed sanding down and re-varnishing- job done.

Yeah only problem with these for me are they tend to be too thick around the border due to the frame. Can't clamp things on easy and my chair doesn't go that low so won't be able to get under it probably. Reason I'm after a desk desk is because they normally take up little volume besides the top.

Make your own.

Spend most of the budget on an oak top, and just get cheap sturdy legs.
