Socket 462 cooler

Socket 462/A cooler

I'm getting quite fed up with my coolermaster Jet 7 (noisy and 52+C when under load at 2.4Ghz) and will get a replacement that will keep me happy until I get a new system in January.

Any suggstions? I want a good cooler that will let my mobile athlon be comfortable at 2.6Ghz. So far I've spotted the
Swiftech MCX462-V and the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU. I personally like the look of the swiftech becuase I don't want to take everything apart to fit the zalman.

Also, what do people think about those gigabyte coolers which claim 'easy installation'?

thanks.

I just bought the Zalman 9500, which I'm quite pleased with. Had a couple of problems with it though; but Zalman coolers are generally good, especially in the low noise group.

I seriously doubt it. I couldn't even fit an asetek antarctica block on my a7n8xe - it would bend a capacitor too much.

Not sure but does the vapochill micro fit skt A boards?

If not there is a cooler called the star Ice that should suit your needs - when it was relased it was rated better cooling than some water kits that were around at the time.

Yep ASUS. But it's ludicrously loud. Much louder than any air or phase unit (or watercooling system) that I've ever seen. Pretty sure it fits socket A though if you don't mind the noise. The performance is pretty good too. Then again I don't have much experience on air! :p

nope - i don't want noisy - my jet is noisy enough for poor performance.

As for the star ice, most people in the CPC labs told me that it was actually quite irritating for long term use. It's also massive and heavy and would require me to change the mobo. I will probably just get the swiftech....

The VMC doesnt fit on socket A boards unfortunately, though im sure you could find a way to make it fit.

Yeah, a lot of socket A motherboards dont stick to the keep clear area around the socket, hence you get bent capacitors.

If anyone does want to fit an antarctica block to such a socket A board, you can either shave down the lid, or you can buy a lid from Asetek designed to work with these troublesome motherboards.

yeah - i couldn't easily get a small lid - and i just didn't have the patience to grind it down - which is ok as the asetek is on my p4 theatre machine (nice and quiet now!!!).

I tell you though - bent capacitors are usually ok but this one just fudge up power regulation over the whole board.

So - any other heatsink/hsf suggestions?

I would go with the Swiftech, should give you good temps with reasonable noise, certainly enough to tide you over till january IMO.

Im lucky in that my Gigabyte board doesnt mind my chipset block leaning on one of the caps (only thing going for this board atm)

ooooh. thanks for the link - it looks nice. I can't find it on the evercool site so might pass. although if it was too big for this person, then it will probably be too big for my board. TBH, even my jet is pretty tight on the capacitors during installation so I might be fudged whatever I get.
