Smart to upgrade to Windows 7 on this rig?

Hello again,

I have had some thinking today, and I want to upgrade to windows 7.

My question is : is this smart on this rig:

AMD Sempron 2400+

1GB DDR Ram.

GIGABYTE 7VT600-RZ

NVIDIA FX5200.

Would this be possible or will it be glitching the hell out of my system?

And also, is it possible to install it on a External Harddisk? (Still faster than my IDE Drive).

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:
  • 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

So technically yes it will but I really wouldn't bother, spend the money you would have spent on it in getting a new rig

And if he upgrades to a new machine what OS is he gonna run on the new machine(hint, hint+the one he just got)

I put Windows 7 64-bit on my P4 just o see how it would run, and it was pretty good, except for some driver support with my sound card.

If you get an OEM copy to put on your old machine, don't register it unless you want it to stay on that machine. Microsoft can be funny about that sometimes.

You can run Windows 7 off 1gb of RAM if you turn Aero and disable some other stuff, there are plenty of guides on Google. If you can get another 1gb so you have 2gb you will be fine, the only time you would have problems is running games that require 2gb of RAM leaving Windows with nothing.

Thanks =)

Best of luck with this one.

I tried both Win 7 x32/64 on a VIA mobo and although all the specs were met and the system was stable enough for a solid XP install, it kept crapping out.

Had a bit more power too, 3800x2, 4g, and a 8400gs PCI card.

You have to install the drivers in compability mode if that helps

Am passed it now. Settled for leaving XP on it. Was just a case of getting an OS on it and selling.

All the drivers went in fine, 7 just didn't like it.
