Slow upload speed to server

Hi all!

Ive just moved over from WHS2011 to Windows Server Essentials 2012.
All of the wireless laptops have all run client back ups and everything is fine.
My main rig is wired with gigabit and its taking ages to back up, by ages I mean 31% in 2 days!!

Upload speeds go up to 16.6mbps then drop to a few kbps then 3.33mbs then back to 16.6mbps.

Server is gagabit, drives on server are WD Green.
(new mobo and processor but drives were used in WHS)

When I was running whs2011 the backups were fast, even the initial ones. ive never had it take days before.

Server and pc are sitting next to each other and going into the same gigabit unmanaged switch, they are part of a larger network.

Any ideas why my upload speeds are soooo slow?

Sorry, didn't explain well enough.

It's the client back ups that are taking ages.
Ethernet
Gigabit lan
Intel nic with latest drivers

I don't know why it's so slow.

I get up to 16mbps then it will go to around 6mbps then the upload will stop. The I will get intermittent Kbps.

Has anyone got any ideas. Could it be my router is crap?

I thought I had fixed it.
Uploading to a storage pool was causing the slow speeds.
Changed the storage pool for a single drive and the speeds increased.
I still have intermittent uploads where the speed ill shoot up and down continuously but I did hit over 100mbps so an improvement.

Then it plateaued in speed to about 3-5mbps for a few hours and now its just shot up to 142-333mbps and staying in that range.

What the heck is happening?
Could it be drive speeds slowing down the upload.
PC has 1 Samsung SSD, 2 WD Green
server currently has 1 Seagate as the storage drive along with a separate OS drive.

Whilst writing this the uploads have dropped back to 0-142mbps. The graph in task manager on the server looks like zigzags.
