Sleeving vx450

Hi, I need some suggestions on sleeving the cables on the Corsair VX450.

I know it's not really worth doing since it isn't a psu I will be using for any next builds, especially when upgrading to a 4770k in combi with the Maximus Gene and a H100i. I want to do this sleeving because I would like to get more experienced with it and of course, it just looks way better.

I also plan on swapping the fan with a SP120. I've looked up some video's on how others did this, it looks relatively easy. The main reason for this is the noise, obviously. Any suggestions when doing this and as for sleeving - I would need to un-solder(?) the cables from the board in the psu, right? That might be quite a lot of work..

Tldr;
I'd like to know if it's worth the effort to sleeve the cables on the VX450 since it probably is one hell to (re)solder(?) them, and if I can just swap this standard fan for a SP120, performance edition. At least, I think it's best to get the performance edition since the fan will be running at higher RPM with less power (than the silent edition).

EDIT:
Might just buy a new PSU since I'd need a new one for future upgrades anyway..

I'd say it's just not worth the investment. By the time you've bought enough sleeving to individually braid the cables, and bought a new fan for it you've probably already spent more on it than the PSU is worth. I'd only consider doing it once you have a decent PSU, which you mention you ought to get when you upgrade the system anyway.

FYI, when you sleeve cables, you don't desolder the wires from the PSU PCB, you just remove the connectors on the other end using pin removing tools :rolleyes:

Hehe, okay. Custom sleeved cables would definately look good with a new build, I'll buy an AX860 or something, modular cables would be easier to sleeve too, I would guess. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, modular cables are better to braid because you can sleeve them end to end easily. With PSUs with fixed cables, to braid it to the end you need to open up the housing of the PSU, and often enlarge the hole where the cables come out, and it's just a pain. The warranty would already be void by braiding non-modular PSU cables, so removing the housing has no negative effect in that respect, but they can be extremely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing because PSUs contain capacitors which can hold enough charge to kill you for hours, or even longer.

Another bonus of braiding modular cables is that it doesn't necessarily void your warranty. It may do for some companies, but I know for a fact that Corsair allow you to braid modular cables without affecting the warranty of the unit. In my opinion, the AX860 is a fantastic choice by the way.

Haha, okay. I've got some experience with soldering and electronic circuits though, that wouldn't be the problem. As for warranty, I don't think I have any, got the PSU second hand 2 years ago. I'll try replacing the fan and buying a AX860 when I have the money.

Thanks for the help & info!
