Sky Internet weird problem ~help!

So I was installing Ubuntu 10.10 on one of my spare HDD's earlier, one which was empty and was not a system hard drive. The first time I tried it didn't work because of some table error, and the only was to get out of it was to reset the PC. When it booted up again, I noticed it was not connecting to the sky router at all, buy since I haven't been using Linux long didn't do anything about it and carried on to install Ubuntu. This worked fine but there was no Internet, so I restarted into windows and the same was true there, it just kept popping up as verifying network, then disappearing completely before verifying network again.

When I went into adapter settings it said an Ethernet cable was unplugged, so I pulled it out and popped it back in on the router and the PC. Still nothing. I ran repairs and diagnosed and it said that the vmware adapters were disabled so I enabled them but that didn't do anything either. I reset the router twice and still nothing.

BUT, the wireless works fine. I have no idea why though!

I'm utterly clueless and need help asap as I use my pc a lot and need it for university too.

Drivers for your ethernet not installed? Linux isn't really the friendliest of OS' to use. I have used it for years but it's just the manufacturer's that really lack the support for it.

Got it fixed, just reset the CMOS and it was fine. Was a bit of a head scratcher at first though, now back to installing Ubuntu....

I have seen this issue before. Linux takes control of network adaptors and on a hard reset they are not let go for some reason........ at least that is how it was explained to me.

Yeah seems a bit gay, I will reinstall Ubuntu today and hopefully it will work this time. If it happens again at least I know all I have to do is reset the CMOS.
