This year at CES, SilverStone and ASUS were demoing their SG Station 2. An enclosure which can be used to link an external GPU to a Thunderbolt device.

This product combines the Power supply and Enclosure from SilverStone and ASUS internal electrics (PCB), it ships with a 450W 80 Plus Bronze PSU, has 2xThunderbolt outputs, 2x Expansion slots and 2x 120mm fans as an air intake and exhaust at the top and bottom of the tower like enclosure respectively.

Essentially this device allows it's user to link a thunderbolt device (in this case an ASUS laptop) into the SG Station 2 which will contain any GPU the user chooses (this case a AMD card), this will then be used for either gaming or any other GPU compute heavy task (like video encoding).
This will allow you to turn a laptop into a gaming PC or a workstation, bearing in mind it will no longer be portable

At present there is not have a release date or MSRP. It is likely that Intel, which owns thunderbolt, has not given permission to use the standard in this way (Intel has been known to have caused similar issues in the past), this is speculation of-course.

ASUS have said that they are currently working on enabling Apple/MAC support, but there are no guarantees that will happen.
