Should I upgrade my PSU for 770? [OCZ500SXS2]

HEY GUYS!!

First post, WOOO!

Just wanted your thoughts on the issue reference in the title, if you would be so kind.

Piecing together a new build which will consist of:
i5 4440
Asus H81I
Corsair H60
MSI 770 2GB
Seagate Barracuda 500GB*
2x2GB Corsair XMS3 RAM*

The HDD and RAM are coming out of the system I am currently using to help keep initial costs down as I am a student on a part time wage. I have no intention of over clocking the GPU. I am interested in whether you think this PSU [OCZ500SXS2] will be able to handle the gubbins inside the system. PC Part Picker has estimated the total wattage to 324w. I am unaware of how close these estimations are to real world usage and thought I would seek knowledge from people who are more technically adept than myself.

Thanks for any input guys. Stay Safe.

Brad

500W would be enough for this system, although i'd stay away from OCZ PSUs...
would recommend something from corsair, seasonic or be quiet

Thanks for the welcome and prompt reply!

Yeah, when I bought the case it shipped with some generic Antec PSU and just opted for one of the cheapest 500watters I could find. this particular model had good reviews on Amazon, so I just went for it. Been ok so far. I will upgrade the PSU in time, probably Xmas, as I will SLi the cards when the time requires and the system itself will be a dynamic project spanning over a few years. Eventually the system I end up with will be completely different from what I have listed above, and I'll just recondition older parts for other projects.

Yep, enough wattage but please get a better quality unit for your own sake.

Yes mate, was one of the reasons I posted. I don't want to run the risk of puttig it all together and then have the PSU just F everything up.

Just looking at the Corsai CX500m for£45, not as expensive as I thought, is this a reputable PSU?

I would look at a decent 650 Watt unit matey, just to have some upgrading headroom (though not enough for SLI but I'm assuming that motherboard is ITX anyway?).

The CX series are fine but they are Corsair's 'budget' series. I'd recommend an RM650 if you can afford that.

Yeah, I wanted a system that was somewhat portable so I could ferry it between home and university, and wanted to spend the absolute minimum on most components aside from the GPU, just to last me a few years and get me through university. Then probably turn it into a LAN rig or something like that when I come to a big build. Hence my apprehension on spending money on something I wont make any real use of in the future.

Although I try and tell all of my mates an RM or an AX would be nice when they are putting builds together they've pretty much all bought CX-M's and they are all running good to be fair, I think 5 out of 7 of my PC orientated friends have one. It's working well for them but I would always try and find the dosh for at least an RM even if I were doing a secondary build, I think Dabs are running a promotion on them this weekend if I remember FB correctly. <(sorry my bad that was wednesdays dealio, keep tabs on Scans today only for Corsair/Seasonic/BeQuiet! PSU's)

1) With a high quality corsair 500w psu you would just be able to get away with it, but not with that terrible OCZ PSU. I reccomend you buy a high quality 600w+ psu
2) Stay away from OCZ psu unless you want your system to blow and to be unpowered

Well its always best to get the best you can get now rather than spending money on something just to replace it with something else. Its cheaper in the short run but more expensive in the long run. Just buy the best you can get now.

Take your OCZ 500W and remove it, then throw it at a wall, stomp on it, then hit it repeatededly with a large hammer (the bigger the better), then set it on fire, after the smoke has cleared, poor acid on it until there is nothing left! As you may have gathered I have a tiny issue with these OCZ PSUs especially the 500W ModXstream Pro as mine blew this week killing not only my GPU but it took my SSD with it... Lucky for me the nice folks at Crucial have decided to replace my SSD. So if you value your system grab a Corsair 650w PSU and be happy.

I think you've learned your lesson

Yes and very important one, so the important message here is "If the majority of a tech forum says "avoid" then it's not a fanboy thing it's bloody good advice." :)

I have put a warning in my sig to save people from what you and me have experienced with the OCZ modxtreme 500 pro

Thanks for the info guys. Funny how I've had that PSU for 5 years now an never had any issue with it. I'll pick one up at the end I the months when I get paid and just hand back on the graphics card... As I'm also planning to buy tickets for a trip to china I'm taking in a couple of months time.

Thanks again guys! I knew you this was the right place to post.

Other brands to consider for psus are Superflower(also sold as EVGA PSUs),Seasonic,Coolermaster,XFX and NZXT. I'd personally not reccomend the CX series over any of these. I own a cx600m and its nothing special, tbh you get more for your money with other brands.

Hi, just upgraded from an EVGA 500B to a Corsair RM850 and i have a 4670k with a 270x Toxic.

The system was working perfectly before and can't see any difference now and upgraded only because i'm getting a 760 Mars.

Also had a OCZ psu in the past for a few months and worked well, so what you have in mind should work great but i recommend an RM psu since it looks better and it's frickin silent!

well in all honsety, not all OCZ products are bad. I have had my OCZ zx850 for about about 3 years now and it hasnt missed a beat, and not to mention my OCZ Vertex 4, awesome value that drive only have to pay $89 for my 128GB.

Just my experience though.
