Motherboard insulation is a big topic with a lots of different opinions to how to do it the right way.

This is just a little short guide to how i like to do it.

What you need is a spray can with plastic paint. Clear nail polish can also be used.

The motherboard i will spray paint today is a MSI P67-GD80 i bought a few days ago. Most people who have used MSI moherboards in there system knows that they use DRMos chips on there boards.

Thats fine for every day use but the problem with these chips is that they are extremely sensitive to water/condensation. Just a single little drop of water is enough to fry both the board and the cpu. I have killed a 1,7 volt 6,3 GHz 980X because I had not properly insulated around the drmos chips.

1. Step

Prepare the motherboard by taking the heatsink and other stuff of that you do not want painted cpu socket, ram dimss, fan headers etc. I use cheapest masking tape i can find in the local store.

2. Step

If you think you have done a good enough job of covering the board with tape then you start painting the board. Remember you can never add too much i have used two 400 ml spray cans before on one motherboard.

3. Step

Wait for it to dry. It takes an hour or two

4. Step

Remove all the masking tape and screw the heatsink back on.

Now your motherboard should have a more shiny finish and be a little bit more waterproof

5. Step

Now you can begin to insulate around the cpu socket with art eraser it is a form of cheap plasticine you can buy from Søsterne Grene here in Denmark but i works very well.

Only problem with using art eraser ot something like it is that the cold goes straight through it which means that condensation easily can the formed near the drmos chips that way i like to paint my boards

I have not painted the back on the motherboard because i only use a Single Stage compressor for my sandy rig but if you are using dry ice or ln2 I would recommend that you also paint the back.

I just use a piotres backplate with 7 layers of armaflex tape to it.

Now you insulation should be good enough for almost all kinds of cooling methods
