So atm a got a person staying at my place and he happens to be a Semi-Conductor Engineer. From what he was telling me he essentially designed Silicon chips for various applications he said he has worked for Cisco and I think he said Synaptics(?)

So I thought while I've got this excellent resource at my finger I'd put it out that if anyone has any questions towards the design and manufacture of Silicon chips shoot them my way I'll ask him and report back with his reply.

Personally I'm looking forward to discussing at length the Silicon lottery and gaining a much deeper understanding of the subject on a whole.

It depends... cutting edge microprocessor design on cutting edge process's like TSMC/Global Foundries/Intel's latest process could be very different from anything Cisco would use.

You could apply the thread title to me too, and I can say the kind of design work I'm involved in is quite different from anything like AMD/Nvidia or Intel do.

Very true, while being a semi conductor engineer is an exciting qualification, Cisco and Synaptics only really manufacture networking controllers and membrane touch controllers it's nothing compared to the CPU/GPU fields, still it's good to know someone in the industry that can shed light into future production techniques ;)
