Seagate SSHD?...

Hey guys (why do I keep starting every thread and certain posts with those 2 words?),

I just came across this oddly enough while looking at keyboards etc, and was wondering, would this be better off having than an WD Black 4TB for recording purposes and/or better off than an 4/5/6TB WD Green for mass storage (pics, music etc)?...

I'm not that into SSHD's though and how they compare to traditional HDD's and even newer SSDs? :p

Thanks,
Chrazey

If it is the same price as other 4TB drives then it is worth it. If it's more expensive and you can get a 5TB drive for the same money and that space could be needed in the future, then i'd get the 5TB drive.

I got my brother the 1TB version, he only has games stored on it and plays less than 3 main games like LoL, Minecraft, and Total War. So whenever he opens up it's pretty quick since it's in the cache. How I see it though, If you have that many files and only with 8GB of cache, then it's probably not worth getting since I doubt you'll be using the same files over and over again with 4TB of space unless programs are on it.

True that... well it depends on the drive itself. As if it's for recording, then well I'll record some gaming etc.

But for the other drive, it's more of an drive to have for storage... so it's like you say, not much to it really.

The bolded part I did not get really... do you mean as in programs or as in storage files (ie music, pictures etc)?...

The thing is, when you go above 4TB to 5 and 6TB, the price goes up quite a bit... I mean, I don't which one to compare it to, a WD Black or Green one. Due to your example above? :p...

It was just stating that it's not worth getting if you purely have storage files like music, pictures, videos. If you have many large programs it's worth getting since it'll be a combination of both. Just depends on what you use it for.

Ahh now I see... so a normal WD Green 4/5/6TB harddrive will be better off than the 4TB SSHD if I just use it for mass storage of media files, rather than actual larger programs that will be used more frequently?...

Have I gotten that correctly or no?...

Yep. Just depends on what you need and how much they cost.

Well if you compare the SSHD to the Green ones, than the 4TB is 100kr cheaper, 5TB is around 350kr more expensive and the 6TB is about almost 1000kr more expensive.

So I'm not really that sure if it's worth it or not... plus that Windows doesn't detect all that storage to 100%, so you'll loose some on it as well.

Can you not use a 60-120GB SSD for caching on the hard drive? I remember this was a thing in the Z68 days but I can't quite remember what it was called.

i'd steer clear of seagate drives tbh there reliability has gone down the pan over the last couple of years to be the most unreliable brand of hard drive.
If you are looking for reliability hgst hard drives are pretty much bomb proof and WD red's coming a close second.

Are you refering to that graph done by that hosting company who used consumer drives for enterprise use?

In my personal experience, WD and Seagate are just as bad as each other when it comes to failure. HGST are kings for sure, but you sometimes have to pay a huge extra to get them.

If you're worried about loosing data, back it all up. Get a NAS.

Partly and HGST is owned by Western Digital i am gessing the recent decline in seagate drives was down to WD geting washed out back in 2011 and seagate droping its quality to pick up demand but that part is purely my speculation.
