I got my brother a Seagate Momentus XT(sshd) and its basically been in use for long hours each day for over a year. Still going strong. Just luck of the draw but really if you just want to store games and music/photos then I don't think many drives will die within a couple years and failure rate is low. Now if you buy a drive for consumers but use it in a NAS/server or for commercial use then you basically should expect high failure rates. There's a dedicated class of drives for those uses.
