SATA burner problem

I got a Samsung sh-s183a a little while ago and it seemed to work fine but I'd never burned anything with it. The first time I went to burn something it gave an error and ruined the DVD. I tried another DVD and same thing happened. I thought it might be the ISO (vista beta2, wanting to try it on my new computer) so I tried a different one, same result. I've tried several different programs and it always says something about an i/o error (different programs give different errors). It also doesn't rip dvds (I wanted to try and see if ripping had the same problem as burning) and it comes up with an error as well (i/o again).

I replaced the sata cable so I know that's not the problem, just wondering if anyone has had similar problems or know's of some fix? I am running a raid0 array and another sataII drive off of my nforce4, could that be causing the problem?

Or is my drive knackered?

What brand is the drive? I remember early SATA optical drives were horrible and acted up like a mofo...

It's samsung mate. I've googled it and can't really find any problems with it. Only things I can see being wrong are that the drive's bust, I'm overloading the nforce4, or there's some incompatibility with the mb (can't really see this being a problem).

The LG IDE drive in the family pc started fooking over dvds, turned out i needed to update the burning programs (Nero in my case). Also a firmware upgrade?

I'm pretty sure I'm running the latest firmware, I'll check again though. I've tried every burning program I have and they all give errors (nero, imgburn, dvddecrypter, power iso).

Edit: Definitely has the latest firmware.

Have you tried the drive with different media? Are you running the latest Vista version ATAPI drivers for your motherboard? I'm betting that this may be the root of your problem.

Yeah CD's are the same. Comes up with something about a communication failure. Vista version ATAPI drivers? I'm running XP, would I still try them?

I'll look into the ATAPI drivers though. Cheers

OK so I checked the drivers and noticed the dates were pretty old. So I updated my nforce drivers to 6.86, after the restart it seemed to re-install my optical drive.

I tried ripping a dvd and the system crashed. Booted up again and tried ripping the dvd again, BSOD - Machine Check Exception. Apparently quite a serious one, but as my cpu and mobo work and the system is not overheating (peaked at 25 degrees when the second crash happened), or overclocked then the probem can only be something that the drive is doing. I've run orthos for a bit and everything is fine, system only crashes while ripping dvds.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Edit: Oh yeah and it never crashed before I updated the nforce drivers.

Are the nForce drivers that you updated to Vista compatible? Are you running 32 or 64 bit Vista? I honestly think that your drive would work perfectly under XP, and as such there isn't anything wrong with it. Are you able to test it on an XP machine to verify?

After a little searching, I found this

Storage

- Unfortunately, NVIDIA RAID is not supported under Vista for nForce2 and nForce3-based platforms, but PATA and SATA storage will work using the integrated Microsoft Vista storage drivers. Please be aware that there are known Vista issues with some ATAPI devices. Microsoft RAID support is included in the box as well.

Can you give us some Device Manager screenies to make sure that you've got everything sorted? You've probably already got this covered but:

SATA drives are designated under the "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" or under the "SCSI and RAID controllers" depending on both the system BIOS and the driver for the controller.

If the system BIOS has options for both SATA & RAID and the option is set to SATA they will be listed under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" and usually do not need an additional driver. When listed this way you will usually see double entries for "Primary IDE Channel" and "Secondary IDE Channel" in the Device Manager.

If the option is set to RAID they will be listed under the "SCSI and RAID controllers" and usually require an additional RAID driver. When you have a RAID configuration they will always be listed under "SCSI and RAID controllers" and you will need an additional SATA RAID driver if it is not included in the Windows base.

Near as I can tell, he is running XP (MCE according to profile). It's just that the disc he happens to be burning is from a Vista beta .iso

Ooops I beg your pardon Doddsy, I had a blonde moment there. Thanks for pointing that out WC. It's my birthday on Saturday and I'm getting old, the eyes are giving out lol

Lol, it was my birthday a couple of weeks ago, I know the feeling!

I've swapped the drives in my computers so that there's now an ide drive in my main system (WC was correct I'm running MCE on it). It had a couple of problems at first but seems ok now(hopefully). I can't test it burning though, it only burns CDRs and I don't have any! I've put my sata burner in my linux system, I'll try burning something with it a little later on to see if it's ok or not.
