Samsung to release 4TB SSDs in Early 2016

Will Tom go mad and use these to replace the 4TB HDDs in WD40?

Definitely the way forwards, mass storage can finally be silent, tiny and cool. It makes no odds to me as I rarely need much much than 400GB, but I suppose if you have an extensive video collection that you'd rather not put on a NAS :D

The price is going to be mental, It currently costs £199.99 for the 512GB 850 Pro, IF the price scales with the amount of storage then it's going to be around £1600 for 4TB XD

I wouldn't buy a 4TB Sata 3 SSD. I would only get it if it was PCI 3.0 and NVMe. Otherwise it's basically old as soon as you get it

This makes no sense?
How long have we been buying hard drives for? It's still going to be great for fast storage.

It does make sense. Ya it'll be fast but if I'm spending the absurd amount of money that it will cost I want it to be the fastest it can be and not be instantly limited to Sata 3. Sata 3 needs to go and we need something faster. Been that way for a while.. hard drives don't really matter since they don't even max out Sata 2.

This no makey sensey ?!

With that line of thinking we might as well never buy another GPU ^_^

Sure PCI-E or NVME would better but with those the price literally skyrockets.

It's already expensive, don't think it would matter much to add on another $100 at this point. Once competition rolls out prices will drop. I just can't justify spending so much money on a platform that's already outclassed in speed. I'd rather get a 1TB M.2 that is already far faster.

it's about capacity for the 4tb one, no need for nvme. They won't sell many of the 4tb ssd, and with nvme even less.
Maybe it's also just a hardware limitation that they don't have a controller strong enough to handle 4tb far over the 550mb/s mark, would be pointless to have nvme with a 650/700mb/s drive.

It's about speed yes - but it's also about capacity, coolness and quietness. Of course it will be expensive but I can really see this coming into it's own in small builds, notebooks and the like.

I have 5TB in my desktop and it weighs a ton, requires drive cages and looks Ugly AF. SSD's can be mounted anywhere. 1TB was close to $1k AUD iirc when it came out and now it's half that. 2TB are $1200 I imagine these will be the same and reduce as well when the 4TB are released.

Yes NAS is an option for a lot of people. Clouds are great if you have quality infrastructure (we don't) If you're on the move all the time this could be more suitable.

That would be 4x less capacity for more money. This would make a perfect game drive, you probably wouldn't notice the difference changing to M.2 speeds.

I will definitely pick one of the 4tb drives if they are less than €800 to replace my 4tb hd. Worth it to have quick load times on any game I decide to pick rather than having to move them all the time :)

If the price could be justified, I'm running five 3TB WD greens in this box, and to tell the truth, most of it is archival and video. Moving that off to SSD would lower power consumption, heat, and actually prolong the life of the data.

I'd do these if they were 2.5" SATA3....IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT. The nature and usage patterns of the data won't change, so I can't justify NVMe or PCIe for the purpose.

Yep fair enough too - the 4TB's are 2.5" but yeah I'm expecting around $1200 AUD.
I'll keep my trusty 3.5s for a while yet :)
