Samsung SSD advice

Hello All,

It’s my first post on the forum and I am looking for your advice

I am buying parts for a new X99 system for a build on October and so far have bought the Rampage 5 Extreme Motherboard and the i7 5930K as well as a PSU a few other bits. I will eventually be purchasing 2 x 500 GB Samsung 850 Evo's as the standard storage for the PC

I want to install a M.2 drive on the motherboard to install the OS (Win 8.1) and perhaps a game or two and I am seeking your advice on which SSD to buy. I am torn between the Samsung 850 Evo M.2 250GB drive and the Samsung SM951 (in 128 GB or 250Gb). I re-watched Tom's video on the SM951 drive last night and it seems very impressive

As I am spending a small fortune on the system so I really did not want to spend £150 on the 250 GB SM951 but I will think about it depending on this conversation.

1) Do you think that there is enough of a speed difference between the M.2 and the SM951 to justify its purchase as a OS drive? What do you think the difference in boot speed will be?

2) Do you think that 128 GB will be enough space to install the OS without having to worry about filling it up? I have to manage my old PC and its 128 GB SSD and I don’t want this PC to have the same problem. No games on the 128GB either

3) Does the SM951 work with Samsung Magician software as Tom makes it clear that this is an OEM device not meant for consumers to get their hands on!

What do you think I should get?

Many thanks in advance!

128gb will be very sufficient for an OS matey as for boot speed i'm sorry I really do not know enough about the X99 platform to comment :)

Does it have to be Samsung? Cause I was going to recommend the Hyper X Predator as a black PCB will look much better in you system than green and they are quicker drives

Hello,

Thanks for the comment

I was going for Samsung because I thought that it would be the best thing to do since I am going to purchase the 2x 500GB Evo's and that I could manage them through the same software but no I am looking for max performance out of the M.2 and if a different OEM is quicker then I will certainly take a look.

Black PCB is also better, matches the Rampage 5

TBH if boot speed is a big concern, I would recommend a more basic LGA15XX build instead.

1) No
2) Short answer Yes, long answer maybe. What will the PC be used for? A 128GB drive can fill up rather quickly even if you dont have games on there.
3) Yes it does.

Thanks for the comment. I take typed two long replys and none of them have posted. Think that the old internet explorer at work is taking a dump on me !

Gaming system mainly, X99 is overkill I know but I wanted the R5E, which I have already purchased along with the processor
