Samsung, SK Hynix are to Supply Nvidia with HBM 2.0 Memory

AMD: we spent years of developement with Hynix to create HBM

----becomes JEDEC standard----

nVidia: yeah we're going to use it with no R&D costs lol

err I thought Nvidia dropped Samsung and have gone with TSMC for Pascal?

Quoted from Guru3D

Previously, Samsung Electronics competed with TSMC to win a contract to produce the Pascal GPU. According to industry sources on Sept. 15, Nvidia decided to let TSMC mass produce the Pascal GPU, which is scheduled to be released next year, using the production process of 16-nm FinFETs. Some in the industry predicted that both Samsung and TSMC would mass produce the Pascal GPU, but the U.S. firm chose only the Taiwanese firm in the end. Since the two foundries have different manufacturing process of 16-nm FinFETs, the U.S. tech company selected the world's largest foundry for product consistency

AMD/ATI have actually pioneered quite a few things that Nvidia then used afterwards so they didn't need to lay out funds for the initial R&D ^_^

Since when did samsung start making HBM? Unless they are just licensing it from SK and then producing the designs at there fabs?

You think they could start mass producing quality chips that quickly? I think we may have a little supply issue for a while at release unless the new cards are released middle of next year.

In fact both nvidia and AMD are rumoured to be releasing next gen GPUs somewhat in the middle of 2016

I hope it's earlier for Pascal, like February or March :) but it might be more like June :( I don't think there is anything other than rumours on the matter? I've read anything between February and summer. Around June would make the most sense, IMHO.

That aside, I'm hoping to get Samsung memory on mine :D

Well I'm ready for upgrading from my fury x! I want that HBM 2 and 14/16nm:p

I hope both get launched in March.. my birthday month.. could make a valid excuse for splurging:P

As for the memory, neither really matters. Both produce high quality chips. I might prefer the SK memory simply because they have had more experience with it

They're more likely going to release them on 2H...

nVidia has scheduled the release of Volta in 2018, so they're probably going to milk Maxwell until the very end and start selling Pascal chips just before or after new AMD GPUs imho ( and then milk pascal until volta )

HBM2 probably wouldn't be available in good quantities until Q2 of next year... HBM(1) has still a low production rate

Well with two huge companies demanding a vast amount of HBM2 chips along with another supplier, It shouldn't be too bad of supply. They just end up making a huge amount of batches so the bulk price is lower.
