Safely Remove C Drive ??

Hey guys, i have a query (sp??)...

Anyways, in normal Windows, i have the "Safely Remove" icon usually only seen during USB operations. I however have the option to safely remove both of my hard drives:

See?

Now, does anyone know how to stop this? Cos a) i'd like one less icon down there (a bit OCD maybe?), and b) i'm scared i'll inadvertantly remove C drive and something drastic will happen.

Any ideas on how to make it go away for these drives?

not a clue, but it comes up on my uni's computers, so they have to disable it for everyone.

probably not the solution you want.

Had a google and the rest is ripped off the first site in the list.

You can turn the tray icon into a shortcut, so it is no longer in the tray, but is still usable. Right click desktop> new> shortcut. Copy and paste, C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll into the location box.

Or

AHA, this might be the one. Are they sata HDDs? If so, go to device manager, then properties of the HDDs, there should be an option to optimise for quick removal. Untick that and they will not appear. This aparently also stop write-caching which may not be good.

Or

If this doesn't work and the device is sata and the mobo is Nvidia, then this could help http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?p=3079.

Hope it helps

Don't quote me on this, but a while back I think I tried it for a laugh and it stopped me as it's the active drive....

Yeh, i'm pretty sure it wouldnt actually let me remove the C drive, that would just be.. daft.

The 2nd option Psuesonym's given is what i'm sort of after. But i'm not sure what write-caching is.. And ho much performance difference there would be if i were to turn it off..

First thing I would have done is "lol", second thing would have been to check the dumbness by trying it.

Somethings just aren`t safeguarded, like u shouldn`t be able to format the OS root from the OS desktop.

(please don`t try it)

Ive got this on mine and it doesnt allow me to "safely remove" your C drive (But it does allow me to remove myD drive :nono:)

You probably have a Motherboard with a Nvidia chipset and when installing your drivers for this you have installed the "Nvidia optimised SATA Driver" (or something like that).

Ive searched everywhere and not found a way of hiding this icon (there was one way but it stopped the icon completely, ie connect a USB stick and it wouldnt appear)

Only thing you can do is ignore it or reinstall your motherboard drivers and leave out the "Nvidia optimised SATA Driver" (or do as above), but this does slow the PC marginly.

Hi wigseryc,

I had that remove c drive icon too.

If you have a VIA chipset, there is a new driver from viaarena, version 5.18, that cured the problem for me.

--------------------------------

If you have a Nforce4 Based Motherboard and your sata drives are showing up in Safely Remove Hardware, this registry hack will allow you to fix it.

1. Click Start -> Run

2. Execute regedit

3. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\nvata

4. Click Edit

5. Select New > DWORD value

6. Name this DWORD: DisableRemovable

7. Double click this new DWORD and set its value to one (1).

8. Close Regedit and reboot

Voila' you're all done!

Good luck!
