Resolution Woes

We'll, as long as the bank don't f me over then tomorrow i should have a nice shiney new 22" TFT winging its way too me (prob slowly as its a bank holiday weekend). Its rez is a nice 1680 x 1050, which is a hell of a step up from 1024x768 as my 15" puts out.

Now im wondering if my middle aged 7800GT is going to be able to cope with this jump. It shines pretty well at 1024x768, keeping me at a solid 104fps (capped, very rearly drops) in CSS. But im suspecting that it will buckle a bit under the new rez.

So, what you kind people think? time for me to cough up for a 8800GTS? Or would another 7800GT SLIed and another GB of ram be a better idea?

Cheers

It probally will... But I would say there is some power still in the beastie..

It may be able to cope.. :D

I guess you will have to test.

It will struggle Ham, I currently get an average of 100fps in CSS with my X1900XTX running at 1680 x 1050.

8800GTS all the way :D

Or you could wait for R600 to be released at the end of this month to see how this affects the 8800 prices.

if money is an issue,it will cope

mine copes at the same res on a 20" with css, most other games are fine too.

cheers.

I would've thought it shouldn't have a problem with cs:s.

I think my setup gets over 300fps on the benchmark @ 1280x1024 with everything on high and 4xAA (I have my fps capped at 133).

7800's aren't that old

I wouldn't worry, as long as you have over 60fps you shouldn't really have any problems.

edit:

Here's the benchmark :)

CSS scaled very well so you'll have no problems there

If your looking for an upgrade excuse though just buy Oblivion :p

Bought oblivion the day it came out kemp:p.

Im not going to be buying anything for a week or two (close to end of the month). Is R600 actualy coming out, or 'coming out' like it was in febuary...? Ill run the stress test and see what i get now...

Play Oblivion and watch that 7800 scream at 1680 x 1050 ;)

SLIed 7800s? I got an extra slot here doing nothing, only £60/70 comapred too £180 for an 8800...

and any prices for the different R600 models yet? *goes to google*

It'll run full settings on CSS perfectly fine. With 7800GT at stock I get bout 88 avg on the Stress Test and normal play I average nearly 100 fps at 1680x1050. And you have a better rig than I do, so should run fine and dandy

I'd go with SLI just because SLI is sexy, even if they're crappy cards.

Do NOT go SLi for Source, you will not find it any help at all!

Source is depends on CPU power, you could quite easy stick with you 7800 as long as you have something like a Conroe.

Source does not support SLi, Nvidia just support it at driver level a little bit and tbh i dont even see a FPS increase when i enable SLi in Source.

Totally agreed. I actually saw a DROP in FPS when running source with SLI.

The FPS will drop but i think you will still be able to play the game decently as long as it is 60+ i see no problem.

Am running a e4300 @ 3.3ghz. Maybe i should redo my vdroop mod and go for 3.6 as a 24/7:D.

I ran some tests yest using my CRT @ 1600x1200. Scored 83fps on the stress test and was darting between 80 and 100 on our D2 pub server. Its not too bad i spose, but id still like my 104fps. Im probably going to stick another GB in next week, just after the monitor arrives, bump up the heapsize to 1GB and fingers crossed that mite be enough to boost it.

Well im running my E4300 @ 3ghz as i cant seem to get the thing stable on anything higher.

Im running Source with a 7950GX2 and get the same FPS in 640x480 as i do in 1600x1200 :( but at least its above 100fps at all times.

I wouldnt even bother running the stress test as it does nothing that you will find in game. If you like ive got a little fpstest.dem (i created for using with the timedemo CVAR) that i could send your way.

Its only about 30-40seconds long but it has a lot of action in game and is running around half of Dust2, covering some of the big FPS drop points such as A Site looking down to Long and looking up middle from CT spawn.

BTW: I run with 16xAF and 4xMSAA and still get above 100fps, but when i turn them off i see no increase either :/ i swear there are no good drivers out for the 7950GX2

You do know that the GX2 is SLI on a single card right?

As for your 4300, what mobo are you running? Ive booted @ 3.6 no problem, just under any load the vdroop on my board pulls it to unstable.

Yeah i know its SLi and thats the problem alot of drivers dont detect it as SLi and refuse to work correctly with the card.

Im using a Abit AW9D Board with the Beta 15 bios, i got it to boot at 3.4ghz but was getting far to hot under the stock cooler.
