Removing asus 7800gtx HSF

Hi

I have an Asus N7800GTX 256mb graphics card. I recently bought a Zalman Dual Heatpipe VGA Cooler (VF900-cu) after reading a good review about it in CustomPC. I have it, but I need ot get my old HSF off. How do I do this? Also, would using Arctic Cooling MX-1 be far better than using the supplied thermal grease?

Thanks!

Taking off the HSF aint hard man... unplug the HS fan, unscrew the screw(s) between the HSF and the PCI plate, then take out all the screws! :p

Ah - I wondered if there was anything important that I may miss out. I heard that there is RAM on the back of the card - is this true? (The new HSF comes with RAM blocks). If so, how would the RAM on the back of the card be cooled with the reference HSF? (I don't see a fan there)

Thanks!

(Oh, and would arctic cooling MX-1 thermal compound be better than the supplied thermal grease. If so, how much should I apply?)

yea theres RAM on the back...the metal heatsink thats on should be useable with the new heatsink...I think. you`ll have to use your judgement, or post up pics of the new heatsink and someone here should be able to figure it out :)

Cant say much about thermal pastes...but a thin layer overall the core is al ya need. A small blob, and spread it out with an unwanted bank card or summit.

Ok - I installed the new HSF and the card runs perfectly. I'm getting a max of 55 degrees C instead of 85, which is very good. THe fan is also quieter than the referenc HSF, even when at max speed. Being lazy I used toilet roll to clean off the old thermal paste and applied new "thermaltake thermal paste", as I didn't want to use the supplied thermal grease and couldn't find any MX-1 paste. Sorry about the large pictures! I would definitely recommend the Zalman VF-900cu GPU cooler.

Here's some pics:
