Reflex is most likely the most promising arena FPS in a long time. Their goal is to combine the gameplay which made 90s shooters so enjoyable with modern tech. This includes an ingame multiplayer map and replay editor, which allows players to make maps and movies with their friends. Of course it will also have matchmaking, lan support, regional and global ladders, bot matches, custom skins, etc.
The engine of the game has been made from scratch to allow the developers to put a focus on very responsive input and of course to create the map editor and other features other engines wouldn't support.

I've been an alpha tester for this game for a while already and even though the game is in pre alpha it's already better than any other arena fps released in the past few years. The editor works like a charm as well, i never used a map editor before and i could pick this one up instantly. This game carries the seekax stamp of approval, you know i barely ever give that one out.

If you like games like Quake, Unreal Tournament, Toxikk, Xonotic or Warsow, please support Reflex.

Just from the video, it looks like doom meets portal with a few texture changes, seems a little dated to me. Just not my cup of tea.

Don't know where you get the connection to portal from, there seems to be none other than the portals and those belong to the standard repertoire of arena fps. Doom is a singleplayer game, so no connection to that either. Quake is the closest to reflex probably. Dated sounds so bad, oldschool fits better i'd say. It's light and simple with a high skill ceiling, just like Quake, CS 1.6, etc..
The textures are all development placeholders.

As you know Seekax I'm not overly fond of arena shooters mainly because they all look like utter crap *Not the point of the game I know* but if this one does look as good as the end textures says it does then I could see myself getting into this :)

The connection to portal comes from.... wait for it.... the portals! And 'dated' is spot on in my opinion, old idea and old execution, as I said it's not a game for me, you go right ahead and enjoy the heck out of it though.

Those portals were around in the original Quake and Unreal games which pre-date Portal by quite a few years so you could say Portal got it's idea from the original arena shooters.

And as Seekax already stated those textures are place holders much like any game in development.

Volumetric smoke and fog effects in the left of this picture, Detailed floors, Walls, Well lit, Hardly looks dated and it will only get better with time.

Did you really just say the game is like portal because it has a portal in it? :banghead:
I didn't see one portal gun or geometric puzzle to solve.

Also, the point about old execution, I 100% guarantee that you're wrong. Why would they even attempt to make a game using old technologies?

On the topic of technologies is this game using DX11 Seeka?

On a side note I personally hate playing these types of games.

The arenas remind me those in Quake III Arena, interesting... I'll follow this title, thank you for the link :)

This is the website of the designer. http://www.bendarling.net/
Believe me, the particle effects are already gorgeous as fuck in slow motion, there are also some things which weren't made public which improve the visual quality a lot as well.

Portals have been around forever, that's not a Portal thing. Not every game with a car in it is like NFS either.
The idea is old and that is the point. CPMA is nearly 15 years old and people still play it because it is incredibly solid.
The engine is brand new, how is that old execution.

Yes, it's currently using DirectX. Linux support is planned though. The engine has been made from scratch, personally i'd consider it the best engine for FPS games i ever got my hands on.

That is because some of them are from Quake 3. Or CPMA to be exact. So far CPM24 and CPM1 have been converted to Reflex (the original mapper is also a tester) mainly for testing reasons. Of course there will be new maps in the game.

Nope, please read again, I said it looked like ...

Oh come one, you yourself know that the phrase "looks like" means more than just visually. Hence, you can say "that game looks boring" or "that game looks like it is going to be fun". You said "it looks like doom meets portal" which could mean that the visuals are similar to the likes of Doom or Portal, but it could also mean that the game styles seem similar. SPS had a valid point and instead of replying in a short, mouthy way, you could have explained yourself.

waah BigBlue sure is popular, anyways they sure did a fine job, I wonder what this game would look like at 4k. Any idea whether or not they will fully support 4k? as in make use of it and actually support it? As at the moment most games allow me to apply the 4k res but unfortunately it hardly looks much better than 1080 except in some.

Yes, 4K will be supported. The textures are already made for very high resolutions.

Oh, well lets see if my 4k monitor sells before then haha. hopefully it isnt a heavy burden on the gpus at 4k, crysis 3 was just sad.

Currently the game is brutal on my 770 (which basically just means that i drop below 125fps occasionally) but that is because no optimization has been done so far. The framerate is supposed to increase ten fold once optimization is done.
The engine is basically the opposite of the crytek engine. This one is actually made for games and not for cutscenes, so expect it to run well in 4k.

ahh, thanks for the info! much appreciated, and since your 770 is doing alright my 290x's shouldnt be a problem, though would I be wrong if I assumed you are using 1080p? Cause I doubt the 770 would do any good at 4k but maybe 1440p or something, just asking.

Yes i use 1080p.
No worries, by the time you get your hands on the game i wouldn't be surprised if a single 290x could run the game at 4k 125fps.
