Hi,

Just under 2 years ago, this forum helpded me choose a PC which has NEVER given me any trouble... Thank you

I now want to upgrade (mainly the RAM) and have a dilema:

1. Remove the existing 8GB RAM (4 x 2GB) and replace with 4 x 8GB

OR

2. Buy a new PC with lots of RAM as I run VMware

The dilema comes in the shape of cost. For example, a new PC might cost me £500 and the RAM might cost me say £250.

My current spec is as follows:

• Antec 900 case

• Corsiar TX750W Power supply

• Asus Rampage Formula

• Intel Q9450 Quad Core (currently at 2.66 default)

• Noctua Fan

• 8GB of OCZ Reaper HPC DDR2 (4 x 2GB)

• WD VelociRaptor 150GB with Windows

• Sammsung F2 1TB with Programs

I would really appreciate your thoughts...

If it is cheaper to remove the RAM and replace, that's fine. Else, if you reccomend I change the PC for one with maybe 6 RAM slots, maybe that is the way forward, AMD or Intel...

Looking forward to your feedback!

Thanks again

Jay

You're asking to buy new RAM vs a whole new computer?

I would 100% say buy some RAM

It is very easy to seat RAM into a mobo

do you really need 32GB of ram??? Gskill has a quad channel kit of 4x4Gb sticks for 124$ not 100% sure but I think thats well below ur 250L plus its a quad kit meaning there matched to work with each other so when quad channel hits you'd already be set for it.

Wait till Christmas and Upgrade your PC with one of the new platforms coming out, as the Asus Rampage Formula is DDR2 RAM and to get better speeds, cheaper RAM and larger sized sticks you will need DDR3 support.

I don't even think you could get a 4GB stick any more of DDR2 let a lone a 8GB stick.

Hiya folks,

thank you for the responses so far!

Just for reference, I am based in the UK.

Will my motherboard take more than 4 x 2GB RAM? If it can, then I may as well overclock the machine and get more RAM. Shame this darn board only has 4 RAM slots!

I read some stuff about using the USB port as additional memory. Is this nonsense?

According to the Asus website, my Rampage Formula will only take 8GB RAM! That's pretty poor... So I am going to have to buy a new PC (but please don't tell the wife!).

Let's kick things of with your views on the following:

Phenom x6 or Intel i7?

Antec or Coolermaster?

Asus or Gigabyte?

z/x/p 67 or 68 board?

Corsair, Kingston or OCZ (for circa 16GB)?

Freezer 7 Pro or Stock?

No monitor, keyboard, DVD drive, HD or mouse required.

Can it be done for £400 inc

The machine will be used for:

Internet

Downloads

Video Editing (Avid Studio)

Vmware

I look forward to your advice...

Thanks

Jay
