This has been something toyed with by HSF makers for a while
Thermalright and Zalmon seem to have got it righ by using heatpipes to draw the heat away from the CPU, then using fins and passing air over or through the fins.
I find I get the best results crawing air down through the XP-120 - also cools my RAM wich is immediately below it
