Ray Tracing is coming to DOOM Eternal - "We'll do it better than anybody"

I can believe that, even back in ~2008 when conceptual work on id Tech 6 was staring they were discussing using voxels(Rather than polygons/triangles) for all their geometry/non-animated world elements and then just raycasting it, but programmable GPU shaders were still in their infancy then, consumer hardware was no where near ready for it, and the engine went in a different direction for id Tech 5 after Carmack left. Of course raytracing goes beyond this but that sounds like they already had a really solid foundation to work from, the switch to voxel-octree worlds would probably be amongst the more changeling areas for developers to get used to but is vastly more efficient for raytracing than using polygons(Though become very messy/expensive very quickly if you try to animate them so polys aren't going anywhere either).
