Random shut downs and the occasional blue screen.

Hi all, had my rig running now for around about a year, got windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on it.

Just recently i have noticed that it sometimes shuts itself down, not sure why and i was wondering if anyone knew a way i could find out from say a system log file? The pc is not that old and i built it myself, it runs games and other apps perfectly but like i said on occasion it has been known to shut itself down. Oh and there has been a few bsod's with an error of memory management?!?

Any ideas, pointer, tips or anything would be beneficial.

Specs are in my profile but here they are anyway:

Win 7 64bit ultimate

AMD Phenom 2 x4 940 black edition @ 3.0 gigahertz

MSI dka 790gx motherboard

4 gig corsair ddr2 ram

8800gs 384meg

2 x 500 gig hdds

Temps are around 45 degrees per core on idle, one fan on the front upper and one smaller fan on the back upper part of case. I know the one on the front might need to be moved but theres no place at the lower front.

Any other info needed then please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Hi and no sorry, i'm actually in a bit of a squeeze financially at the moment, to be honest with you the power supply is only (like i said) a year old, not even that to be honest. Could that really be the culprit with it only being so young?

I thought there may be some sort of event log or system file which logs all these errors so they can be identified and treated, i'm not sure of where that file may reside on a system like windows 7 but i'm pretty sure that ive heard people talk about it.

Thanks for your response too.

PS: have to say Fragtek, i've just realised how alike our systems are besides a few differences.

well your PSU whould still be under warrenty so thats ok,it may be that your temps are getting to high under load

Power supplies can and will fail at any time. I've had power supplies that only worked for 4 hours..... The problems you are having are 95% always related to PSU problems, that's why I'm making the suggestion.

Ok cool, is there a way i can test the psu? I have a screen grab here of everest ultimate edition as speedfan i think is reporting bogus results, i cleared the inside of my pc today and reseated the heatsink on the cpu, still a little high for me i think but not enough to want to shut it down on it's own, so maybe the psu is pants then?!?

I Never thought about the psu's warranty but i bloody well will now, i'll be calling them in the morning to ask for either a refund or a replacement as i can't have mobos and other things getting fried on me, i've paid too much money and man hours for that to happen.

Thanks for the responses too guys, any chance of commenting on my temps plz, the voltages should be on the screen grab too.

Cheers.

PS: These temps are idle by the way, and it's after i've cleaned it out, i've left it on for about 4 hours while i went out, i have literally came in and sent u guys this, oh and it didnt shut down either it was still on after 4 hours. Appears that it's more random than i thought, also it has never shut down whilst i am doing something like playing a game or watching a movie. Only times ive noticed it has been when i was transferring a file between hard drives and another when i was using Ares to download some tunes.

Appears random but i'm not sure. So is there a log of errors and the like i could check on???

PPS: Load temps are a little higher but not by much, the gpu goes up to around 80 and all the cores go to 52 and the cpu says 50 too, mobo doesnt go much higher than what it says in the grab.

yer you need a PSU tester fella that will tell you if your getting al the correct volts etc etc, altho i guess a voltemetre will work

Havent got a voltmeter. Will look into getting one or borrowing one, not even sure how to use it, i know the voltages on everest haven't changed at all since i got my pc.

Looks the business that m8, i'll invest as soon as i'm back in work or i get the dough for it, lol i'm poor at the minute.

Just a thought but are my temps ok??? i've just changed the heatsink and it's actually cooling better than the one i bought specially for my old amd64?? it's not as big or as loud but it appears to be doing slightly better, i have only just put it on too. Heres a grab.

I was using a freezer 64 Pro but at the moment i'm now using the stock heatsink which came with my cpu!! seems to be doign a better job but it's a lot smaller and doesn't look flashier at all, to be honest i don't really give a hoot what it looks like so long as it's cool. u have the same cpu as me, how did u overclcock it? or do i need to lower my temps before i start trying that?

i just bumped up the MULTI and the vcore,i was idle at 30-35c i need a better cooler to be at 3.6Ghz my vcore is 1.42 and multi is 17.5 BUS @200.

but yes wait for a better cooler

What kind of cooling systen shall i go for do you think???

Budget is minimal at the moment, so a few cooling tricks would be helpful, not overclocking anything for the time being but when i get a proper cooling system then i will look into it?

So lets say what fan and or cpu cooler would you go for?

Cheap - ishhh?

titan fenrir is the best bang4buck cooler IMO i think its £23 and i think it comes with a fan

Nice one i'll look into that, I just added another fan to my case at the bottom front, it doesn't have the huge circular hole to pull air from but there is gaps at the front so hopefully it'll settle in and drop my temps down some, had a few scares when putting it all back together but it's ok now and running sweet.

One thing i would like to ask though, i have an AC Freezer 64 Pro and the copper surface which comes into contact with the cpu is actually smaller than the cpu, wouldn't that be a problem when dissipating heat? this is why i went and used my stock cooler which came with the cpu as it's coverage of the cpu is far greater and it covers it all, I don't know if it makes a difference but i thought it would.

when i had a freezer pro on my athalon 64 dual core,it did not fit the CPU fully as in you could see the edge of the CPU all the way around, and i was getting 13c idle ha ha.

my nordwand ATM does not fully cover my CPU ither and its mounted fine

Ok cool then ill pop the freezer pro back in there then, hopefully with the new fan which i've put in it'll make all the difference, what technique do u use to apply thermal paste?

I usually paste it all over the surface, should i be just using a bb size amount and squishing it in??

Damn i sound like a noob.
