Raja Koduri takes a Sabbatical from AMD's Radeon Technologies Group

Lol, had to use Google Translate to understand the definition of "Sabbatical". Thought it had to do with Sabbath, but Sabbatical only means "research vacation" or in this case "family vacation". Is that correct? :D

Yes that is correct.

That is correct.

The term sabbatical does come from the word sabbath, though today it is pretty much just a vacation.

So they 're working on Navi, the next big thing, and the leader is off to be with his family. Just after a fiasco. He's getting fired...with honors.

Mayne not. Vega was already in the pipeline before Raja signed on so it's not really his project. Navi will be all his work and what will determine if he's out of a job or not.

Well he will have the most influence over Navi, I do believe it won't all be him. With AMDs intent on using infinity fabric and HBM he is kinda locked into those design choices and AMDs needs/wants to get all there stuff onto the fabric. He his kinda limited in a sense. Seems like the most influence he will have is the internal architecture itself and the rest is kinda decided.

I hope Navi reduces the amount of cores/ACE or CU as a whole. The 1 CU consisting of 64 shader cores is the design from 2011. Meanwhile Nvidia has since Fermi been making each cluster smaller but faster and more efficient. Yes I know architecture differences and yadada. But clockspeeds sell cards and I'm sure we've all seen this. People who don't know better choosing the Nvidia card instead because it has a "bigger number". I think AMD can still retain there compute advantage and improving the efficiency of there CU by making it smaller and on the plus side able to get higher IPC per CU which honestly is pretty important for DX11.
I'm no architecture engineer. But I feel like something needs to be done since this core design has been in place since 2011 and we can all see how that's going.

Whilst I am quite excited about Navi I just don't get it. Basically it is a multi core GPU. Sounds great right? well yeah, on paper. The problem is Microsoft and Sony have just released their next gen consoles, which means there won't be any more for at least a couple of years maybe more. That means that for this gen the consoles are still on a single GPU so nobody will bother coding for Navi.

I would be a little less confused if Navi was coming out in about three years, but once again AMD seem to be doing something for the future which probably won't work now, when we need it.

No one will need to code for it. Just send it off to the GPU and let the GPU decide where it should go. It will do it better anyway.
Also consoles are designed years ahead. They would either work with AMD in that timeframe or just get minor adjustments to existing designs. No new consoles should be coming out for 2 years. So it's more than enough time.

It is correct, though the word has its origins there.
So hes taking a sabbatical, starting on a Monday. He couldn't get that right...
