Hi there guys and girls. I would just like some advice. IV currently got the R9 290 vapour x 4 gig card and looking for upgrade in the amd range. My current board is the Asus 970 pro gaming aura with a fx8350. I have been looking at the Asus strix rx480 8 gig. Any suggestions or am I going in the right direction

If I can recall correctly, the performance of the 290 in terms of gpu power is the same as the rx480, the difference being that the rx480 consume much less power. Also with that CPU I don't think that anything stronger than the r9 290 would do much....

Unless you are going for 1440p and you are actually going to need the extra 4GB of vram..

The 480 is faster, in many cases almost as fast as a Fury X, but worth the upgrade? No. If you are at 1440p and games you play tend to be VRAM heavy it would be worth it after selling your 290. If you aren't selling then I'm not sure it's worth it..

AMD should be releasing a RX400 series refresh, dubbed RX500 that should be using a better manufacturing process to get more OC, could be worth the wait if you want to stay AMD. They are also releasing Vega very soon as well, which would be a big big jump in performance for anything AMD, with that said I'd say wait on the upgrade and save up and upgrade your CPU as well tbh. It will limit what you can do and if you jump up in GPU performance you won't be getting as much as you could.Upgrade to say Ryzen 5 if budget is tight would be a pretty big upgrade and you'd be set for years once again

I have the 290X Vapor X but I have decided to wait until Vega is released as its seems a better option. I looked at the RX 480 myself but was advised not to upgrade from my 290X as it would be more of a side-grade, that was from a friend of mine who works for a well known AMD graphics card partner.

I use a 290 currently (used to crossfire aswell) and the 480 isnt a worthwhile upgrade, the numbers are almost the same, the biggest fps increase I got was when I moved from my 8350 to a 6600k
