Question with memory overclock

I know i've been pestering the forum recently for information as well as slapping pretty much everything I do on here but this is probably going to be my last question for a bit.

I've been running my E6600 at 3.4ghz - 425mhz x 8. Ram at 850mhz on 4-4-4-15-2T.

I've just decided to run it at 3.5ghz - 389mhz x 9. Ram at 778mhz to keep the ratio at 1:1 which is more stable from what I read everywhere.

My question is this.. My Ram has more to give than the 778mhz its clocked at now just to keep the 1:1 there.. Is the 1:1 more beneficial to me than just keeping the fsb the same unlinked and just clock up the Ram as far as is stable with some random ratio.
 
Bench both settings (Linked and unlinked), and you will see which one performs best. Use 3DMARK06 + your fav games, and something like Everest to test the bandwith CPU and Ram.
 
Timmy's right, best way to see if thats better is to test.

tbh I suspect running the RAM as high as possible will be more benefi than 1:1 at a lower frequncy
 
Im running in sync mode with exactaly the same frequencys.

And it is perfect for me. ;)

Linked is a better performer than unlinked.
 
Does his motherboard support Sync mode?

Because then it would put it from 1700 1:1 down to 850.

I am running this at this very moment. 8x424 = 3.4ghz and memory is linked on sync mode making the memory run at 850mhz..

Or have I just totally missed the point! :)

I have got sync mode but i've just unlinked and worked out the ratios myself.. obviously not that difficult. I had mine at 8x425 = 3.4ghz with ram at 850 but i've bumped my cpu up to 3.5ghz so to keep 1:1 with the 9 multi its made the ram 389mhz = 778.

I'll do as above and just test both..

Might even try 8 x 438mhz with ram running at 876mhz to get there fsb of 1750.
 
I know its a hastle to bench every setting, I just had to do it with my cpu and ram. I found in 3DMARK06 that a higher CPU speed and lower Ram unlinked was slightly better than lower CPU and higher Ram linked. But only by 39 points. Id rather have the faster ram for my video editing.
 
Thanks all for the help even though it just means more work for me ;)

I stupidly went and booted up with the new clock settings without changing my timings.. instant blue screen.

As for running lower multi with higher fsb it doesn't seem to need any more voltage or run any hotter with Prime95 torturing.

I've totally loosened my timings so will try and tighten them a little and see which settings are better. Will report back later tonight or tomorrow as i'm off out to see Snow Patrol tonight.
 
Ok so i'm back and a little worse for wear but i let it bench while i went out

Result is this:

3.5ghz made up of 389 x 9 = 778mhz ram with timings of 4-4-4-12-1T and a ratio of 1:1 so the ram was underclocked.

That had a 3DMark06 score of 11248

3.5ghz made up of 437.5 x 8 = 875mhz ram with timings of 5-5-5-15-2T and a ratio of 1:1 and the ram was overclocked.

You would think that with the same cpu clock and the ram overclocked that you may get a better score??

3DMark06 of 11228.

So the higher multi with lower fsb and underclocked ram with lower timings scored better... Next test will be with same settings but with ram up a little and the ratio a little away from the 1:1 that seems best.
 
With regard the last post...

I went with the 3.5ghz through a 9 multi x 389 mhz. Rather than leaving it at 1:1 with the 778 ram i bumbed up to 800mhz with same timings and my 3DMark score dropped by 8 points.. Minor I know but I wouldn't expec it to drop at all with the higher Ram clock.

Maybe tomorrow... That means dropping the timings and then tightening them to find the best and so on and i'm tired...

I have the ram at 830 on the same timings now and am gonna run 3dmark as i sleep. The ratio is proper random at 15:16.
 
Just a heads up. I cant clock my Ballistix AT ALL on this board. On a kit that does over 1100, 2.4v, 6-6-6-20 and it will BSOD @ 900. 800, 1.9v, 4-4-4-15 and everything is peachy though.

Managed too get my Patriot too run at its rated 1066 with ridiculously loose timmings (all were auto, ended up like 6-7-7-25 or something). And that was 2.35v.

Black slots are supposed too be better than the yellow, god knows why but they are.

I hope you get a lot better luck with yours.

Checked the score when i got up this morning at it was fine at 830mhz and the 3dmark score went up 50 or so so its working. Will have a go at higher tomorrow as i'm not in tonight.

That was with timings of 4-4-4-15-1T I think... Could be wrong though.
