pwm fans

PWM fans work because the 4th pin can operate the speed of the fan independently from voltages.

3 pins fans work by just decreasing the voltage supplied to the fan, and thus lowering the speed.

As PWM fans are not as common, fan controllers are not so easy to come by - although, a normal 3 pin fan controller will work on a PWM fan as long as it has open corners - ie: http://www.gttkc.com/shop/images/molex4pin%20to%203pin.jpg

If it has closed corners like: http://www.pcsilent.de/ppic-MAXI--525molex3.jpg then you will not be able to fit it.

So no, you cant really buy PWM fan controllers, but certain 3 pin ones will work...

Alternatively, you can buy adapters - http://www.specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/Phobya-30cm-4-Pin-PWM-to-1-x-3-Pin-Socket-Cable-Black-pid-14420.html

Hope this helps

I think using motherboard headers just creates a mess. Far rather use a fan controller so I can neatly hide away all the cables.

Glad to be of help!
