Right so the PS3 is finally out in the UK.
After a very long session at a mates house last night on the PS3 I am going to offer up a few opinions. Please note these are my views.
Interface
The Interface of the PS3 isn't too bad but it strikes me as a little too fussy. There's too much faffing about and it all looks a bit intimidating. Hate to say it Sony but you should take some hints from MS
Console Looks
Sony get's a first prize here. The PS3 looks damn good in a modern media setup so full marks. The 360 looks ok beside it but lacking a certain finesse. The slot loading drive is much more functional than the 360 and is far better thought out.
Console Noise
The console is 100 times better than the Xbox 360 when gaming. You can't hear it at all. In fact you can hardly notice that the PS3 is on.
Controllers
Here I am totally disappointed by the PS3. The controllers are virtually the same as the PS1/2 controllers...and HOW old are they. The Sixaxis lacks weight and lacks ergonomics. When I first saw the boomerang controllers I laughed but quite honestly I think they would have been a big improvement on what we got.
The motion sensing feels "tacked on" currently, not developed specifically for the games. However it does add an element that I feel could be a bonus if developers who actually bother to use it.
After picking up a 360 controller and comparing there just is no comparison at all I'm afraid.
Graphics
There's no doubting you can see the potential there. Resistance looks pretty poor, but Motorstorm is just awesome and shows how much potential there was. GT HD demo looks lush too
Gameplay
I can't comment a whole lot on this as I've only played a few games. Resistance Fall of Man is pretty poor all in all and just an average FPS. Motorstorm is pretty damn good fun but the Sixaxis steering system doesn't work totally and is no match for the Wii. Pretty good fun though but I can't wait for the great titles to come out.
Online Functionality
It's pretty good and a web browser is no doubt a good addition. However, you can't help but see that it just isn't as slick as the 360's version. Xbox Live is awesome and there's no doubting it.
I'm hoping Sony are going to "pep" this up a bit and their "Home" is certainly gonna do this by the sounds of it. Hopefully the trophies replace the excellent Xbox Live points which seem to give all the games an extra element that makes them have a bit more life.
Final Thoughts
The PS3 is a neat bit of kit. Very neat. The UI needs some work and it needs more games for sure. However, the hardware is very nice and shows a lot of potential.
The controllers could do with a re-vamp but I don't think Sony will do that.
A 360 beater? Not yet...
