PS3 'Failure' to Penetrate Market Inflicts Financial Troubles upon Sony

For the fourth quarter alone, analysts believe that Sony will post a ¥75.8 billion yen ($630 million) loss, up from ¥66.5 billion a year earlier. For the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2007, Sony is reporting ¥71.8 billion in operating profits ($597.09 million), down from ¥226.42 billion ($1.88 billion) from fiscal year 2006. That's a huge drop, even for a company with as many interests in Sony. The problem lies with the PlayStation 3: GamesIndustry is reporting that the games division is operating at a ¥232.3 billion deficit for the fiscal year.

It is a very impressive bit of hardware..

If it came out earlier and sony didn't sell the GTA contract they will be motoring! ;)

I don't think anyone can deny the fact that it's a quality console through and through. However, it's only worth about $399 in the public's eyes, and the game selection is weak sauce.

Sony, do something right.

i hate sony, not just the ps3, but the whole company. But im still pretty sure they will manage to do something right in order to get the PS3 up there in the top spot.

I love my PS3 :worship:

Not many games out at the moment, but I downloaded Gran Turismo HD Concept the other day and it's brilliant!!! :D

All I can say is good luck to Sony..

I hope the PS3 pulls through.. I have played one a couple of times and had a look around it.. pretty impressive. :p

are they still going for the limited features until you pay xtra approach ?? (e.g. 2 cars no upgrades but u can buy new toys online .. also a NFS tactic)

Yeah it's one track but can be played in reverse (so I guess you could class it as two tracks).

There are about 8 standard cars, then another 8 which are tuned. Get the Elise with a turbo on it, traction control set to 5 (out of 10), put racing tyres on and turn off the active stability management and you can have some great fun sliding the car around the corners!

It's good fun :D

Yea i admit its a good system. Ive played on one a few times but MGS4 just isnt enough to justify paying that much for one game.

The games here on Play.com are no more expensive really than PC games.

It does have it's merits over a PC but then again, I couldn't be without my PC whereas I could....at a push, be without the PS3.

Im not even talking about price of games. All i hear from ppl is MGS4 this and MGS4 that. That one game dosent justify paying 600 bucks for one console.

Really? Honestly I haven't heard too much mention of MGS4. Most people have just said that they want/need more games

There's a lot of titles I'm looking forward to seeing on it (my mate has one), but like I said the major stumbling block for me is the pricepoint and lack of games

I read somewhere that the blu-ray drive will cost $100 cheaper to make very soon. Not sure if this will effect the consumer price as sony are loosing so much per console.

I'm not even interested in MGS4 (I take it that's Metal Gear Solid 4?).

Gran Turismo 4, GTA4 and PES7 is what I'm interested in :D
