Project Temporary.

Basically I was getting a bit bored recently of my Q6700, so I sold it and replaced it with an E8600 for some high clocking fun before switching to i7.

My Maximus can't quite do what I want it to do with this chip so I figured I'd do some small upgrades to help me.

Now I was just gonna put all this in my current case (Antec 900) but am now thinking I'm gonna put in the ATCS 840 I've had sitting in a box in the other room for a couple of months. Reason for this (and the thread title for that matter) is that I'll probably be keeping this rig until the 32nm's come out next year, so while I can't go 8 months without using the new case, it's still only temporary.

Aaaaaanyway I've got a few bits together now but will have to wait a month or so to actually finish as I wanna wait for the new PA120.3s to come out with the 15mm spacing so I don't have to butcher the roof mounts that come with the ATCS.

Without further ado, here are some of the pieces to my jigsaw.

Excuse the shonky pictures... The light in my room is abysmal (stupid energy efficient light bulbs).

Mmmmm yummy Asus P5E64WS will give me lots of FSB to play with!

These are for the Mosfets (obviously)

A couple of these will go on the lil PLX chip just above the south bridge. And now lots of fan controller bezel pics..

Tom is right about being tough to get a decent pic of this sort of paint so here are a load.

Will really have to crack out the case at some point....

Never seen that mobo before, it looks well smart!! Hope it clocks well for you :)

The entire case going to be painted like that?

Yeah the board is well nice.. Pretty much the best X48 (or at least top 3) board there is.

As for the case, yeah it is all painted like that... If fact it's fairly similar to this one:

lol wondered how long it would be before ya said something :p

Well like ya said, let me know if you happen to have anyone after it and I might get a couple of other lil bits done.

As I have a few of the bits out now, I thought I'd do a tiny lil bit just to get the ball rolling.

Figured I should replace the thermal pads on the Enzo copper RAM sinks and then remembered I had some Sekisui #5760 Thermal Tape hiding somewhere. Managed to find the stuff, but first had to get the stock pads off the RAM sinks which was much harder than it should have been.

Old thermal pads:

No thermal pads:

Aaaaaanyway, I could have used one sink right in the middle of the chip, but decided I'd go overboard and slap four on there even if they do overhang quite a bit.

That's all for tonight.. I'm gonna enjoy this one over the next month or so as I don't have to cram it all into one days work now I have practically two full rigs worth of hardware.

EDIT: One last pic of some random other dudes mobo just so you can see how much smaller that PLX chip is and gauge how much those sinks will overhang.
