Project 'moaning Wife'

Well I've wanted a PC in the bedroom for a while now but the Mrs has always refused at having a pc box in the bedroom (and I must admit I quite agree).

So 'project drawer' is soon to be done.

Basically I'm going to build a watercooled PC in my sock drawer in the bedroom, it'll be nicely hidden from view and if I go passive it'll be quiet so I can carry on gaming into the small hours with no disturbance to a sleeping Wife. :D

Firstly I need to settle on a spec, then I'll need to convert the house to wireless, thirdly I'll need to build it.

Building starts next week :D
 
right started to compile my list of parts, some I have spare from my recent 'main' PC upgrade, some are going to be shiny and new :D

Will post some pics of parts shortly :D

Mobo - Asus P5GD1-VM (my old spare mobo out of my last PC)

Chip - Intel P4 3Ghz (again old chip out my old PC)

HDD - Maxtor 250gb Sata

Memory - OCZ 1GB

PSU - FSP Quiet Storm 500W (my old PSU)

GPU - no idea yet, depends what I can pick up half reasonable and cheap (6600gt or similar)

This should be more than enough for some light bedtime gaming and surfing the net to look at, errrr the news obviously ;)

Display - I already have a 20" Relisys Monitor TV in the bedroom, not the best resolution but again adequate

Watercooling - so far this is what I think I might go for:-

Swiftech Apogee

Swiftech Storm

XSPC Passive Reservoir (not sure if this will fit in the limited space I have)

Laing DDC Ultra Pump (space saving)

Alphacool 642 Maxi Passive Radiator

and 1/2" tubing all round

this will fit nicely ( I hope) in the drawer with the Rad sitting behind them (although this may change depending upon what temps I get with the rad in this location).

Some perspex and mesh has been ordered (for a little design idea I have in mind)

Wireless stuff - Netgear - ordering later this week

Keyboard and Mouse - going to have to be wireless (although not chuffed about this idea with gaming) no idea what yet but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Right time to start gathering parts :D
 
rofl mate, great project... I dont see how u can get away with gaming in the same room as your sleeping wife though. Even with headphones and a silent computer the banging of your fingers on the keyboard will be quite noisy.

I still want to see this project come full circle though :D

And I'm not so sure about a passively cooled P4 either, that could be some housefire material right there. Athlon XP or A64 might be a better choice perhaps?
 
LMAO, I did quite successfully passively cool this P4 before but admittedly it was in a case not a sock drawer (temps around 55degrees under load).

This may be where the plan falls flat on it's face but hey ho there's no harm in trying :D plus it could give you all a good laugh...

If not then AMD here I come, don't worry this project will be built either way.

The Wife seems quite up for it although if she now reads this thread (highly unlikely) it will now bring to her attention the noise of the keyboard clacking away, that until now I'd managed to avoid mentioning to her :D

Oh and obviously the socks will be removed :D

Now just need to put 999 on speed dial :D
 
if I was building a PC to sit in a bedroom drawer, id be tempted to make into a media centre PC, considered that?
 
I did consider making it a media centre but with a media centre extender on it's way to me already, thats a whole differnet project :D

This is purely for a bit of fun :D
 
im likeing the name. And if llwyds WC setup is anything to go buy if the wife complains about noise from that she could hear for britan.
 
Of course a side benefit you could mention is "well whatever heat is being let off is going to `air` the clothes in the other draws, save on heating..."

.. might get away with that, particularly if u`ve had a recently large utility bill.
 
well a small change of events, last night Mr Intel P4 was nicked to go in a mates HTPC case :( He softened me up with free Beer and after that there was no resisting his requests to 'borrow' the chip.

So it looks like I may go down the AMD route after all, just need to find a half decent M-ATX AMD Mobo (skt 939 as I think I have a 4600 round here somewhere) anyone any suggestions???? Has to be M-ATX so as to allow me plently of space for other stuff in the drawer :D
 
Hmm, well the Biostar Tforce 6100-939 is generally considered one of the best mATX boards out there. Boards based on ATI's RD480 chipset are decent too I think
 
bugger the 4600 I have is AM2, time to cancel the mobo I've just ordered. :(

Oh and the XSPC passive res just won't fit so back to the drawing board on that one :(
 
Not sure if they do an AM2 board but I've had a couple of AOpen board in the past. They're always very solid and AOpen are experts at mATX
