Years ago the bug in Shuttle case far, far away there was a CPU that fought a war of frames against an enemy who vowed to consume all the resources within the land. The enemy was Half-life 2's source engine. It shiny DirectX 9 graphics had captured the mind of the its operator. Soon there was not enough frames to go round and the Source engine began to search for a way to improve the situation. Research revealed a new graphics card so powerful it was hand-picked from the assembly line for its blistering speed and awesome processing grunt.

The orders were drafted and the elite debit card unit was dispatched. Several months passed and the engine received word that the acquisition had taken place, delivery was imminent. After the cards arrival it was inspected, its red colour shining through the diminuitive case, chrome writing proclaiming X800XT PE dominated the side as a mark to strike fear. The engine had its prize and it worked.....WELL. Frames for everyone was proclaimed. As the frames began to spew forth from the red giant a problem was noticed, heat. In the tiny case such power could not be left without sufficient air. "A hole!" cried one idiot. Make it so thought another. A hole was created to draw cool external air in for the red giant to heat and expel from the rear. This was only a temporary fix though there was still not enough air going to the red giant. The battleground must be changed.

A Coolermaster Centurion case became the arena for the battle, a larger arena with fresh air flowing across the land. The Source engine was happy and content but a single word struck fear into its heart, enough to slow progress and worry it about the progress made. UPDATE. Its new arrival was beginning to flag but after searching for answers a new idea was formed. The CPU must be changed to cope with my demands and all I must do is wait, "MUHAHAHAHA" cackled the Source engine. In due time the CPU who had fought valiantly was superceeded in command by the smaller but far more capable Q6600. This new commander could multitask the red giants ass off and once again the Source engine was supplying frames for everyone at large rates. Times were good until the word was mentioned again. UPDATE.

Frames were in dire shortage and nothing could save the situation. The Source engine was all but maxxed out trying to keep its reign of frames going but inevitably another change was needed. Once again the elite squad was organised for a sortie of epic proportions. The target was new...very new. It had 768Mb of memory and enough processing grunt to tear your face off, the red giant was a feeble mouse comparitively. The crack unit was not tasked with the acquisition of this one unit as this was not a change of fun but of desperation. The elite force was to retrieve two of these beasts. Mere days later the arrival of the gloss black units brought a sense of awe to the case. Now the Engine had full power bristling from every point and the frames were hurtling out, like pyroclastic flow from a volcano, an unstoppable force that many could not even believe let alone match. The unfortunate problem was although the frames were flowing out like a volcanic eruption it had the heat as well. Suddenly air was not enough, the battle had changed, the forces revived and retrained, situation was no longer straight, tactics and skill were now the tools of mayhem.

Watercooling the weapon of the Source engine to chill all parts to obtain the maximum frames possible. This was not out of desperation but out of fear, the Engine had suffered from the last mention of the word so it must be prepared this time. The CPU had fallen to this new weapon chilling is cores more effectively but it was not long before more were engulfed in the coolant. The two black beasts were so hot headed they were heating this new weapon to ineffectiveness. Its chilled coolant running through its vein heated by the beasts until the battleground was at a critical temperature. The beasts easily fell to the watercooling force as did RoG Fusion. Could air cooling survive? Is there any hope?

One drop. A single piece of coolant was spotted and engineers quickly dispatched to fix. The reducer having two wormdive clips was leaking, a quick tighten and that would be it. The ray of hope extinguished from the air cooling eyes of despair. Not really though, the leak became worse and worse and worse. Until suddenly the town of Northbridge was totally washed out, the neighbouring towns Southbridge and Mos Fet connected via the Fusion were also drenched by this almighty c0ck-up by the Engine's maniacal ways. Air cooling had clawed its way back the Fusion camp was their's, albeit by default but a victory is still a victory. A metal reducer was planned by the maniacal SOurce engine but efforts by the crack squad to obtain it have so far been thwarted by something called "out of stock". With all the component currently under water control the black monolith (PA120.3) that stands tall in the watercooling camp has become hot, very hot. Again the Engine drafts plans for a new home, a new battleground, the final frontier, an expanse of liquid cooled freedom.

The black monolith of water cooling power stands tall while an overshadowing loom of doom approaches. The battleground selected and arrived, The Silverstone TJ07. A black battleground with separate sections for forces to congregate. The behemoth has taken stage but will the cooling war ever reach a peaceful end.......

Ok so the story above illustrates the struggle I have faced but I wouldn't change that for the world. Basically I have been through several motherboards, CPUs, RAM in order to reach this level of nutcase and I aint bloody moving. I'll post some more important changes in specs for you along with current specs which will evolve with this thread.

Ok so what about the build so far. You now know what I've been through to get this far but what on earth is a project thread without pictures. So here is the first installation.

When you go watercooling you can pretty much just stick it in and say go as long as your not a clot. Well, I'm not a clot usually but I didn't want a clot moment royally screwing up my PC so I looked into protection. The Sub-zero boys came to my rescue, conformal coating was the answer. Next on my list was making sure everything could be at its optimum. The dTek was prelapped so that was him sorted but my CPU (Oh my CPU) was still showing its makings and deserved some attention. The final results can be seen below. Next up was the GPUs cover and with full cover blocks I know heat will be transferred wonderfully. Some gratuitous geekporn shots included.

As I only watercooled the CPU first (and the mounts never came through) I stuck it together pretty quickly and was happy with it until a gaming stint saw the temperature go WAY up. The GPU air coolers were heatsoaking the CPU watercooling loop. So I had been forced to re-route for the GPUs. With the coolers on, the loop temp was stable but much higher than hoped. So some mini coolers were strapped in to help case temps to level out the behemoth more.

Here is the watercooling setup I have currently, click the bits to see them properly.

Changing battleground to the TJ07 means I will have lots more room for airflow and more importantly more room for radiators. I have two PA120.3 radiators and soon will have 6x YateLoon SL fans. Currently the loop goes Res-Pump-Rad-CPU-GPU-GPU-Res but my plan will include two radiators with what I can only presume will be way too much tubing. So the new loop will go Res-Pump-Rad-CPU-Rad-GPUs-Res the GPUs will be cooled in parallel to stop heatsoak from one affecting the other.

Now I have read the reports about order making very little difference to cooling capacitiy but this is absolute balls and any physicist will explain that thermal transfer occurs more readily and to greater extent when the temperature difference between the two substances is as large as possible. This is why if you take a beaker of boiling water and monitor the temperature every minute the temperature change will be most marked when the temperature difference between the water and air is as large as possible. So chilling the water after every component will increase the temperature difference between contact surface in the water block and the coolant. This means that cooling the components is more effective.

Ok so here are some pictures of the case before any tinkering. I've stuck in one PA120.3 in the shots to show positions and problems. So after the list it will actually be pretty smooth sailing.

I need to:

Trim part of the motherboard tray to stop it snagging the radiator.

Cut a tiny hole on the PSU cover so I can bleed the radiator without removing and jiggling it about.

Cut the cases upper vent hole to the size of the PA120.

Bend and cut new grill for the new size top vent.

ROFL nice one mate, you've certainly had an interesting time :D You'll love the TJ-07 it's a classic and built for water-cooling. I love mine :yumyum::drool:
 
LOL at that massive story, but you should of replaced source engine with CryEngine2 part way through, that would really make the "black beasts[?]" sweat in fear! :D
 
Ok so today I took some "Before" pictures to help you realise what on earth I am doing. I have also given out the list of thing I need to do before even thinking about disassembling my PC to move to the TJ07. Unfortunately I have also found that my planned 7" touchscreen (to be fitted to the top of the case flush mounted like a Star Trek touchpad control won't happen as I have less room than my worst guessestimates had thought. I might try a smaller screen or I might try some hardcore modding for that bit. Unfortunately with this shaking my mathematics I have resigned myself to making sure the normal setup works first off, then going to the modding mentalist steps.





"Spare" parts as of this morning

Where my holes need to be cut for the PA120.3 bleeding nipples

Where I need to cut to fit the roof mounted PA120.3 and the 92mm fan hole that is spare due to no fan fitting between the side and the radiator. I'm thinking maybe a coolant temperature readout for the plain ease of it.
 
Given out of stock parts from WCUK I have nothing but time currently so I'm having a think. I wanted a 7" touchscreen in the case to handle fan control, gaming scripts, plans, chatter and for information readout.

Well it looks doubtful that once I fit the WC stuff that the 7" will fit and given the functionality I had thought about devoting to it, it seems pants to not try something. So plan B if the 7" is unable to be fitted.

Plan A

7" touchscreen fitted flush (not sure of orientation so buttons on side or bottom) to roof of case to act as Star Trek hand controls for various programs. Games it will function as automated chatter, map tactics changing for given maps, fan control (not sure of support level for this).

Plan B

Use my old 15" TFT and buy a touchscreen kit off eBay to replace the plastic cover with a touchscreen. It shall be sited alongside my current monitor and function as instructed in Plan A but be 15" instead of 7".
 
I've added the other bits that have arrived. I am still waiting on the aesthetic fitting bits. Once they arrive I can build the mounts up and then its the fitting process so I'm getting excited now
 
Getting rid of my on-board (well PCIe onboard) SupremeFX sound card to go with the new X-Fi PCIe card. Its better than most and cheaper than the Asus which is under serious legal battles with Creative over its use/breach of certain technologies. Plus it will look brilliant in my case which shall function under the same colour scheme.

Super Talent have a knack for memory be it SSDs or RAM they are usually the first with some insane product. 2000MHz DDR3 was one such thing but they decided to have kits with pretested ones for those speeds and the $400 price tag the US folks are seeing is not what us UK folk are getting :D

DDR3 2000MHz 9-9-9-28 goodness is shipping its way to me RIGHT NOW :yumyum:

WCUK has two orders (28/06/08 and 2/7/08) for materials for the build and without them I can't start. I need the other 3 Yate Loons (SH), TIM pads for the EKGTX blocks and MeshPanel to create the grill/rad holder for the roof.

The computer is used every day so I am trying to accomplish the build with as little downtime as possible. Not really that easy when the parts your using are in another PC. I have an extremely overactive imagination so have planned everything down to the 5mm holes for the bleed nipples. I should be able to show you the finished case by day 3 of the build and then its just the transfer. Once its here all here I'll throw up the pictures.

Progress may have gaps :rolleyes:

Day 1: Measuring for cutting - Holes shown on diagrams earlier.

Day 2: Cutting and finishing - Gonna be careful.

Day 3: Fitting of "OEM" stuff - This way the transfer is easy.

Day 4: Transfer of PC - Centurion to TJ07 then leak test in bath.

Day 5: Burn in testing - Stock settings running 3DMark06 looped then some Orthos.

Day 6: OC testing - Crank it up and test again.
 
The only reason i've bough the new bits is I am impatient. I was so delirious a few nights ago I nearly bought a Killer K1 NIC. I even found a place to do my logo as the heatsink.
 
Ok so the new kit arrived and I fitted both all seemed fine no error message or BSODs until i restarted. With some checking about i found my problem.

X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty PCIe soundcard.

It didnt bork my sound it borked my graphics then proceeded to bork my ntoskrnl.exe and my boot.ini with it glorious sound.

If you have SLi and XP x64 DO NOT BUY THIS CARD!!!

It will be RMAd ASAP because it is simply the bringer of death to XP x64 even though it is "compatible".

The Supertalent is cool no benches yet as I've re-installed 7 times becuase of the sodding soundcard. Hopefully I should see a hundred or so jump for the RAM.

i freaking hate X-Fi cards!!!... ive had 3 of them and had an engineer come out just to replace them every time... after the 3rd time i made them take it back lol

Day One:

As you can now see I have a problem :mad: basically my original plan of having two PA120.3 is just not going to happen at all. The top mount is simply not big enough for a dual row radiator so I'm going single core (and maybe add a 92mm rad if i can find one and am that bored). As you can see I have mesh left over this is because I did not form the 5mm slight raise for the roof. This way I get to do another mesh for the top which will keep the system more quiet as well as give it the OEM look. Oh and dont worry once arranged I will do the spraying.

Just not gonna be Day Two until I'm back off holiday :( Nevermind at least my parts should be here too by then :wavey:
