It's Latin for learning. Anyway just posting some preliminary pics of a probably very long term project. Here are a few pics of the case that I got it in.

I was thinking about dremeling the exhaust but then thought what's the point casue I'm changing into the larger case so I'm gonna focus on that.

Here is how I got it:

get.php

Here it is after I've added; a YS-tech fan as an exhaust, DVD-ROM drive, extra 80Gb hard drive, and swapped teh 56k modem for a network card.

Here's the case I'm going to be putting it in:

Thinking about having a DVD-ROM and burner, as well as possibly a 3x3.5 into 2x5.25 hard drive caddy. Maybe set them up as RAID3 or RAID5.

Thinking about modding the 80mm fan into a 120mm (or 92mm at least).

Here's the insides, plenty of room in here:

get.php

First stage will be to get some decent ventilation going through it as I want to run the chip passively, looking at the thermalright SI-97A (anyone got any experience of this?). After I get the case breathing a bit better, and possibly looking a bit better, I'll be looking for a nice (cheap) quiet little PSU before I put everything across. The hard drives and things will have to come later.

Full specs:

AthlonXP 1800+

Nforce2 mobo (no idea what kind yet)

256mb ram

40Gb HD + 80Gb WD caviar.

Onboard sound and gfx

Your mobo is an MSI.

As for a PSU for that kind of system you could pick up one of the Hiper 350w that would do the job.

I liked the I.T. works too, pretty funny.

Yeah I'll only be looking for something like a 350W, main things would be edecent build quality and quiet. It has an FSP 250W in it just now which should serve it well for a while.

And good call Ham, the mobo is a MSI MS-6367.

Ok slight adjustment to this project, just sold the PC for double what I paid! :D Good business. So as I have some DDR and an A64 lying around (and a zalman 9500) I'm gonna change it to a socket 939 system. Should give me a bit more grunt. I'm gonna base it around the asus a8v-vm as it's cheap, available, and has onboard video (can't afford a gfx card).

Edit: Yay, 100 posts!

I love these kind of mods. Looking forward to its progress.

I think on forums a condition of membership is a thread where everyone has to post a pict of them and their comp.

That way as you and your comp change everybody gets to watch.

Well I was just about to order my mobo and thought about the PSU. I'll ultimately (hopefully) be running 3 sata drives in raid5, system drive (80Gb EIDE) probably a RAID controller, mobo, a64 3000, 512mb/!gb Ram and a couple of DVD drives. What kind of PSU should I be looking at?

Tagan 330W:

Seasonic 330W:

I like the look of the seasonic but not sure if 330W would be ok for all those drives, I probably won't be using a gfx card and if I do get one it will be fairly low end. WHat do you guys think?

I bought one of these for All4Spl and its a really good PS

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=271184

If you dont want the fancy blue colors than i think this is the same one

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=468726

Its a little more but it will help in the future if you need more. Its always better to start with a good foundation when building a comp.

I try to stay away from PS with 80mm fans (noisy/low flow fans)

FSP is a really good company.

3 or 4 Hdds wont draw too much power (the CPU and GPU are the power hogs) so either of your 2 choices will work.

Yeah I was looking at that one too, there's also another Seasonic on Scan that's 380W. Hmmm, choices.........

Thanks for the recommendations guys, I was stuck between 2. The FSP and teh 380W Seasonic. After reading reviews on silentpcreview I went for the Seasonic, primarily because it's quieter. I'll get some pics up when the stuff arrives.

Here's the stuff I had delivered/stuff I had lying around to go in:

During the install I deceided I'm gonna get a new case for this, the one it's in just now is awful. Thinking about the coolermaster centurion rc534.

I'm also having a bit of a nightmare with it, I installed ubuntu but it turns out that there isn't a display driver for my integrated graphics! Stupid thing takes ages rendering anything.

I will get around to installing ubuntu server at some point. Also my boot drive (western digital 80Gb) makes a ridiculous whining noise that's really annoying.

i see that fan controller that you have... doesn't that come with a remote you can use to turn it on and off?? how does that thing perform??

Don't think it came with a remote, it has a temp sensor, vu (?), and one 3 pin fan header. it's not bad but i'm only using it for the cpu. And 'cause I had it lying around.

get some spray paint and spray the case black or something :)

looks like it's turned into quite an expensive project

Not been expensive at all tbh, if you take into account the money I made back on the original PC I've ended up spending a grand total of about £10. Most of the bits for it (a64, 9500, HD, memory)I had lying around. All I needed to buy were the PSU and the mobo.

And lol @ Frag, the case is awful. The metal is so thin on it, it just bends and breaks so easily and the damn thing has so many sharp edges!

Yeah, it's bad to say the least... Works good as a cheap-o though, but so does setting everything up on a cardboard box :p haha
