Problems with new install on Shuttle sk43g

Hey there I built a system for a friend over the weekend based around the aforementioned barebones system. I’ve finally managed to get an OS on there but it is unstable as hell. Here is the history; it would be wicked if u guys could help.

-removed the rubber pads from the cpu (XP 2600+ to make good contact with the HS)

-Whacked the memory in Corssair value 2700

-First power on, amended bios to boot from floppy. Updated bios with the latest version using amiflash.exe ftp://ftp.shuttle.com/BIOS/fx43g(sk43g)/fx43s410.zip

- That worked fine, then got into the bios and set what I thought to be a good stable set up. Plug and play OS on, ACPIC functions on, pretty much everything that controls memory / resource allocation left to the OS. SPD settings on the memory which runs at 166 (ddr 333). As there was only one drive I turned RAID off / set it to IDE mode.

Heres where the fun started. Booted of XP disk (corp volume license edition with SP1) It copied all of the files and got to the end of the first bit and I get the good old irq_not_less or equal bloo screen. Why do i only ever get this on VIA chipsets!! Arg.

Ok take 2. Go into bios load fail safe defaults. Reboot and reconfig slightly to allow correct boot device etc.. That’s it promise!

This time Windows builds ok. I got in there did all of the VIA drivers.. which confuse me slightly. Should I install Arena or Hyperion, or both? Seeing as they all do things for the chipset. If some one could recommend a good set of drivers to use and the order to whack them on it would be sweet. So got the drivers on there including VGA DX9. Should I bother putting the VIA usb2 on there as the support is already in SP1? I did it anyway.

Amongst all of these installs nast unexplained reboots started happening, sometimes a blu screen sometimes not. Checking in event viewer confirms that there IRQ problems again.

So Tonight im gonna start from fresh. I guess its just an install order thing, and knowing which drivers to use. I found a different part to the shuttle website (@ the we I had been using .co.uk but .com seems a lot better organized) I intend to install in this order…

After that DX9, then SP2?

Go to "Device Manager" when there click "View" (up top) and click "Resources by Conection" then "Interrupt Request (IRQ)"

This will show u what devices are linked to what IRQ...

What you dont want to see is more than 2 max 3 devices on the same IRQ number..

I remember once i have an ABIT KG7 and it had exactly the same prob that ur having and thats because windows was setting nearly all devices to the same IRQ... because it was such an old board it didnt have and PnP/IRQ configuration in the bios so the only way i could fix it was to install the PC as a non APCI system..

Hopefully u should have this option in ur bios.. all u need to do i specifiy each PCI slot to a certain IRQ..

If thats not whats happening with u then i would suggest maybe trying with 1 stick of ram at a time...

other than that i have no idea sorry...

Yeah, ill give that a go, sadly though looseing ACPCI just means config probs later on as far as im concerned. With a plug and play OS more than one device can share the same IRQ, (since OHCI compat drivers started poppping up for everything) as long as they have different memory addys..

Ill give it a whurl to see if i can pin it down. Cheers for the help.
