A pain in the butt for most Windows users is that Windows likes to presume too much. It thinks that just because you've closed an application, you'll want to reopen it again soon, so it stores a bunch of DLL's (Dynamic Link Libraries) in memory until it gets bored waiting for you. You can force Windows to unload DLL's from memory as soon as you have finished with them, with a trip to the registry: Navigate to [HKEY-LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\], create an entry called 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and give it a value of '1'

Windows can be a bit of a 'tard sometimes, and either forgets or plain ignores the fact that your CPU may be fitted out with wads of L2 cache (or second level cache). Give Windows 2k/XP a poke in the ribs and tell it how much cache you have.

In regedit browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] and set the value for 'SecondLevelDataCache' to the value, in kilobytes, of your actual L2 cache size. A value of '0' tells Windows to try and autodetect the value from the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).

#Note to self: Don't be clever and tell Windows you have four terabytes of cache. We all know you don't, and it won't take Windows long to figure out either. If you do, however (and I seriously recommend that you don't), let me know the results. :D

Thats really cool PV - would it be better setting it to the actual L2 or setting it to '0'?

Just a quick tip: for a '°' sign - press and hold "alt" and then (on num pad) "2 4 8" in sequence. Then release the keys and you have a ° ° ° !! :S

I set mine to it's proper cache level, but you could change it to '0' and let Windows have a crack at it mate. Your choice :)

IF U HAVE A MOBILE PROCCY DO THIS

Mobile proccys have more cache and windows usually detects it wrong

this actually gave a performance boost to my P2 LAPPY but it has the same cache as the desk version ... tarded winbox
