Post-Format Problem

Discouraged

New member
I was recently given a computer by one of my friends who didn't want it anymore after he upgraded.

When I got it, it was in a pretty bad shape. So I re-partitioned and formatted the hard disk, and used the setup disk to re-install Windows XP.

Here's some screeshots of what I discovered afterwards:

My system specs are there aswell. Ok. So apparently there is no Display device. I don't know a great deal about computers, but I'm pretty sure that without a display adapter, the computer should not function at all.

The guy that gave it to me wasn't sure himself of what graphics card he had purchased for it. So I opened it up, and to my suprise, found absolutely no card inside. Then I did a bit of research and learnt about the existance of IGP's. CPU-Z tells me that the motherboard is made by SiS, which according to Wiki produce only IGPs and not cards. I thought I was on a roll.

I went to the SiS site, and downloaded the correct drivers for the chipset (741GX) and tried to install them. I got an error message, telling me that there is no VGA driver.

I'm unsure about what to do here. If anyone could shed some light on my situation, that would be great. And if there is anything I need to explain further, or any extra information that might be needed, feel free to ask me for it.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. If this is in the wrong section, then I apologise. =)

I just downloaded those drivers and tried to install them. It came up with an error message along the lines of "Could not find a compatible driver for your hardware device." =(

EDIT: And just as a point of interest, how did you work out what the mainboard was integrated with?

Naw. Still no good. Keeps giving me the same error message. "Cannot find compatible driver for the hardware you are using."

When I boot up the computer, I get a prompt to install the VGA controller. But when I follow through with that, it doesn't install because it can't find the right driver. Hmm.

Thanks for the help so far guys.

Hello mate.

Here's the VGA drivers for your mobo straight from the Asus global support site. The one second from bottom should work fine with XP.

That's awesome. I thank you kindly. That installed the VGA and SiS Mirage GPU. It's a 32mb integrated GPU.

The only problem now, is that my friend tells me that the card he was using with it had 128mb. Should I assume that this is the Geforce 4 MX that one of you has already mentioned? Because I have just tried installing the drivers for it, but it doesn't work.

I should mention that the I/O plate is empty, ie the AGP and PCI slots don't contain anything. Is it possible to have an integrated Geforce 4 MX? This is all pretty confusing for me, so let me know if there's any more information I need to give.

Thanks again WinMXer. It's made my evening just to get this far with it tonight. Very much appreciated.

Yeah, I assume so. But the AGP and PCI slots are all free. Which is why I'm puzzled. :)

EDIT: Your first post already tells me that Geforce 4 MX cards are integrated. That's what I get for not reading.

So, if it's there, how do I go about installing it, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks for the suggestion nrage, but those ones won't work either.

Gives the same 'could not find compatible hardware' error message. :(

Yep, it does 3D and everything. It's just not very good. :p

EDIT: Been told that it's not possible to have more than one integrated card. So whilst I have the SiS Mirage 330 integrated into the mainboard, I can't possibly have the Geforce4 MX aswell. Seeing as the AGP and PCI slots are empty, that only leads me to believe that there's nothing there, other than the integrated Mirage. Which doesn't make sense because there is no way that the guy who gave this to me could possibly run TES: Oblivion on an integrated 32mb card. Hell, I used to play Oblivion at his house on this thing from time to time, and it ran fine.

Hmm.

Yeah, I think I've been slightly mislead by the previous owner. I'm guessing that he took the card out before he gave me the PC, and decided to let me believe it was still in there. So far he insists that there's supposed to be something else, but I think it's been shown that there isn't.

Thanks for taking the time out to give me a hand. You guys are great.
