Possible R520 delays

It's an interesting topic of discussion.

From what I can tell surfing around, yields to have 32 or even 24 pipe cores are low, the majority of these are being shipped to Microsoft and Nintendo to be used in the next generation consoles.

What does this mean for us? Well it looks likely that R520 will at best be in short supply until after December so only the quickest people with the deepest pockets will benefit from these units.

R520 looks promising though if the yields ro supply improves.

It also looks as though Nvidia will have some supply issues.

PS2 sold more units that Xbox and Nintendo put together, so if we can expect the same for PS3, Nvidia will have to supply as many cores to Sony as ATI will to Microsoft and Nintendo so the supply issues of yesteryear will probably effect both camps.

Overall, not good news for the consumer.

But also the ones that dont make the grade will be re used for the crossfire cards as they dont use 24 or 32 pipes only 16 like the x8## cards

That's true, but I guess that they will want to be able to offer 24 or 32 pipe crossfire as soon as possible to compete with Nvidia's units of the new G70 that will be SLI sompatable as standard I presume.

I stil believe that both offering will be in short supply until Xmas.

When either of these two high-end cards become available I am sure Phil will be selling shed loads of 850w PSU's ;)

I knew something like this would happen. Although i`m surprised that NVidia is gonna wait till ATI release- I wouldve thought they`d be eager to get the market dominanace if possible. The 6800Ultra and X800XT PE all over again :( Shops wont be selling many 6800GT/Ultras or X800XT/X850 now, everyones waiting for either the new cards or the price drop.

On the subject of new releases, AMD X2 are available on import for £250 plus shipping. Unless they`re sold out now.

AQs always with these releases there's only one loser - US :(

K404 - Pls PM me the links to for the import on the new X2 CPU's.

Cheers

Just wondering...

didnt know crossfire was only for 16 pipe cards... but...

isnt 2 16 pipe cards in crossfire config like 2x660gt in SLI - ie a waste of time since 1 6800gt is just as good...

plus, as cfire/sli isnt 100% efficient (ie not double the performance by having 2 cards) wont a 32 pipe card pwn it ?

K404 - I think Nvidia will be releasing there G70 24 pipeline cards (7800GT/7800GTX) fairly soon. I think the R520 will be faster than the G70 (32 pipelines and all) meaning nvidia will release there 32 pipeline card (G80?) right after ati R520 release.

I'm not going to upgrade to a 24 pipeline card with 32pipeline cards just around the corner.

Also could you pm me the store with the X2's also :)

Jellybeard999 - Crossfire will be for 32 pipeline cards also.

That sounds good to me.

I notice that early benchies with 7800's show 3dm05 at 7500 points some 2500 behind R520. So if R520 is released anytime soon the 32 pipe version will have to be released a bit sharpish to keep up.

Of course Nvidia could be up to its old tricks and the extra 6 pipes could be unlocked using rivatuner - but thats just speculation by me :D

Nick, Mav, Y`all got mail :)

NVidia and ATI must be pretty insecure in their products if they feel they have to release them at the same time. Fair enough if NVidia are gonna release the 24pipe card soon, but if they`re gonna have a 32pipe card in a couple months time, whos gonna buy the 24???

The 512MB cards have just come out, the 24 pipe cards are about to, then the 32 pipe cards. if everyones waiting for the 32, NVidia will put the prices up coz no-ones buying their gear atm. IMHO, its no good having so many releases so close together- upgrade junkies get their wallets screwed, and the company loses money coz the majority wait.

Well I was looking at this crossfire pwnage
