Please help protect something I love

If you feel like it could you please take a minute to sign a petition to keep skateboarding OUT of the Olympics.

I know most won't understand why but the Olympics need skateboarding more than we need them, it's purely a commercial view point they are taking and seeing as Skateboarding is not a commercial past time this will only lead to ruin something I really enjoy, for instance they're going to class it under the cycling banner???? WTF?????

I've spent the last 23 years skating and it's been something to do on my own, with friends, in times of stress, in times of fun or just cutting back, letting loose and bombing down a big hill, the last thing I want to see is a set of rules and guidelines governing something I'm passionate about, thats not what skating is all about, there are no rules you make it us as you go along and you smile while you do it.

So please those with a spare minute can you wave your magic e signature over this please (it may do no good but it shows there is strong opposition to the idea...

Meh, tbh I`m 50/50 and 50 on this.

In one sense I see where u`r coming from..

But then in the same breathe cycling isn`t exactly olympic material imo, traditional track and field, maybe water stuff and stuff they used to do on fields from my pov (weights `n wrestling etc)...

The extra 50 is the part of me that says, heck they`re even using advertizements and having professionals in some sports, and time moves on..

ugh

signed

signed several of these already, it's a complete joke imo. Skating isn't a sport, it's an art and a way of life. Most people won't understand this because their view of skateboarders is kids with big baggy jeans and slipknot hoodies trying to grind curbs infront of the local Londis.

Even if you're indifferent please sign it, take it from those who know, this will destroy one of the things I and others have grown up with and loved every minute of it.

If you think it will be fun to watch, go to the local skatepark tbh

Although I don't think that skateboarding is something that belongs in the Olympics; I think that you guys are overreacting a bit it is not like the skateboarding cops are going to come and get you. A way of life? Sorry, but that is ridiculous.

I signed it.

Signed. Mainly because I have massive respect for skateboarders because it's something I've never been able to do with any success :p

Well when you consider that I used to spend about 6 hours a day on my board MINIMUM then yea it is. Once you hit a certain level it practically becomes a type of meditation. I reeaaaally don't expect anyone to get that but it is, you switch off completely and just have the time of your life, each and every time.

Things have been ruined enough by the American 'sue everyone' culture that is creeping in over here. Kids parents have sued skateparks when their kids have hurt themselves, which pushed insurance through the roof and put loads of skateparks out of business.

If it becomes part of the olymics, the whole world will suddenly have ideas about how skatboarding should be, which is crap. People just want a slice of something that the majority has shunned for years because they can see there is money to be made of its back, regardless of what it does for people like us (Ayd in particular) who have built the whole thing from the ground up (well, 23 yrs = from knee height up ;))

YES!! Im a BMXer and the Olympics would KILL skating and biking! For those who dont understand yes it IS a way of life to some ppl. Once you put more time into your biking (or skating) than your gf or anything else it becomes life. When practicing your racing technique or flat land technique more than doing homework or chores it becomes life. Something some ppl justr never will understand.

Can we get one going to put CS:S IN the Olympics???

Heh, that might be closer than you think. I just saw on business news a few days ago a completely sanctioned league with teams and such (like a normal sports league) for games (CSS, Halo, bunch of others) is being started.

These have been around forever.... The CPL and MLG for starters.

Ya, but near as I know, the average person doesn't know about them. This league is something that's going to be aimed at providing entertainment for the masses, being put on TV etc etc.

Maybe I'm not thinking clearly, heh

ill sign it, but im still not sure why..

why isnt skateboarding a sport? llwyd u say its an art and a way of life, but isnt that the same with any "game/sport". as far as im concerned, if it has rules and a way of scoring (which skating does) then isnt it a "game/sport"?

btw the reason im differnetiating between game/sport is because I feel they are different, but thats another story :)

Llwyds not wrong guys, it really is. I miss my 24/7 skating life, but other things ride in. Ive spent the last 6 years staking. Lived the life for 4 before slowing down too accommodate women, a job and my PC related stuff.

Getting up each morning and thinking 'where can i skate today' rather than 'what do i have too do'. Spur of the moment trips too towns up to 80 miles away (4 years before i could drive). Constant poorness, lugging tools and spares around in a rucksack, along with spare clothes, the biggest bottle of water you can carry and what food you've mustered.

Was kinda like being homless, but with a home too go too when your muscles couldn't take any more.

Anyway, how ever you look at it sign up. It needs too left too grow form the streets where it came.

Well not really, these rules are forced on it, not part of it. When I jump on my board it's not a case of 'what can i do now that constitutes a 'good trick'', I have a look around and make the best of whats there. People underestimate the determination of some skateboarders, it's an addiction, how many tennis players would carry backpacks full of halogen lamps and batteries, then scale several fences just to find something new, something to be creative with. (or in their case, play tennis....)

Like Ayd said, skateboarding is always there for people like us. It's a physical activity you can do with friends and enjoy, no matter how old or unfit you are. Be it bad back or poor eyesight, you can still line up at the top of the biggest hill you can find and see who scores the highest on the speedcheck signs (20mph was my best btw.... although some friends got about 25).

Besides, i'm pretty sure kids wouldnt get police coming and threatening to arrest them, and even using unnecessary force, to stop them playing cricket, which having been through countless times I can say is something I am not willing to allow everyone to about-face on and say 'oh actually yea, skateboarding is acceptable, sorry about the last 30 years' so someone can make a truckload of money. Skateboarding is skater owned and skater run, just like the skateshops that have survived for years and years. When companies get into it to make money they fail, hard. I have seen shops like route one and Legends have thousands of pounds pumped into them, only to go under, simply because there's no heart behind them, only greed. The local skateshop has been going for a long long time and the owner has told me how the shop makes no profit at all, but he keeps it running because it's what he loves.

Tennis players have 'seeds' and football has league tables, deciding who is better. I don't know a single true skateboarder who would for one second put another skater down or put themselves above others. From starting out i've skated alongside seriously gifted individuals, I admired their talent and they pushed me to join in.

I dunno, I could go on for pages about what it means to me but I cant expect anyone to understand really, not due to ignorance or closed mindedness, just simply because everyone is different.

The only way I think I can sum it up is to say that Skateboarding is not outdoing each other, it's not who is faster, who can do the best or most impressive flip, it's not about what country you're from, how much air you can get or how cleanly you ride, skateboarding really is 100% about forgetting every single worry you have and just having fun

And why should cycling not be an olympic sport?

It's essentially a road version of track and field?
Agreed totally. I mean if you really want to get down the the nitty gritty of it all the Olympics aren't what they used to be anyway. The modern Olympics were ever only to be for amateur athletes, not for professionals.

Signed petition anyway, as I don't think skating is a legitimate sport personally...along with surfing. I used to skate all the time as a youngster, so I know where you're coming from.
