About time too. I got a pentium (upgraded from a 286 to a pentium) about 9 years ago and they were awesome then- of course, all computers at the time had "IBM compatible" written on them. They need a change in branding, especially since AMD are so great now!

I definately wouldn't object... Pentium is far too old and burnt out.

Its tough to think of a good name for a CPU... I've just sat and thought about what would be cool and I've thought of tons of shit but none of it sounds "just right".

Both "Pentium" and "Athlon" both seem like kickass names for processors.

'bloodthirst the knowledgeable' :worship: Apparently the Sempron name is intended to evoke phrases like "semper fidelis" and other such tokens of solidity and steadfastness. Roughly translated from a mix of Latin and leet-speak, though, Sempron means "always pornographic,"... interesting  :D

Often processor names are two syllables.

I think it may be due to the fact that human brain processes them easier as a unit of sound.

Athlon: Sempron, Pentium

All of those are two syllables with a simple onset and a slightly more complicated middle cluster. Even the "tium" is one syllable with a vowel glide reminiscent to modern English's shift in vowel movement. This makes it easier to remember as a unit of meaning.

AMD's cores like "Winchester" and "Newcastle" got shortened to "Winny" and "Newcy" and who doesn't pronounce "Opteron" and "Optron"?

Anyway end of Linguistics class....it is interesting from a Linguists point of view to see whats coming next tho :o

I don't! :rollingla

I think you'll find that if I came over and recorded you in "normal" conversation that you do. It would be unusual for a native speaker of English not to tbh.

Written language is not "natural" language and so native speakers don't realise how they actually speak half of the time (3 years at Uni taught me this ;)) :)
