I had to go down to pcworld yesterday as my dads wife (blonde) wanted to get a new pc for the office. So I agreed to go just to show how much they rip people off and also to prove the people who work there know nothing.

The salesman was a complete t**t.

salesman: what are you looking to use the pc for?

dads wife: an office pc

me: we were looking at getting a core2duo

salesman: well you might find a celeron or a p4 will do the job, core2duo's are made for doing more than one thing at a time (err MMX chips were made for multitasking - 1997)

salesman: will you be using the internet?

dads wife: yes

salesman: do you have wireless? .... the only reason I ask is because Vista is only compatable with wireless networks (err is it?)

dad: well we have a wired network in the office, do you sell anything without vista? as we are used to xp

salesman: no, microsoft stopped making XP and no-one who sells pc's actually does pc's with XP anymore.

me: well dell sell pc's with XP?

salesman: welll ummmm.....errr.....yes they do...... erm

me: well ok we could just dual boot XP

salesman: well, the only problem is you would viod the warrenty then

salesman: also you would have to download all your drivers for the system from the internet (as if that's hard. I know 13yr olds who could do that with no problem)

me: yes (look at bloke thinking how the f**k did you get this job)

salesman: we have this system here which has everything you need (celeronD + 17" TFT for £450  )

salesman: what office software would you want with the system (he actually thinks he has a sale)

me: well we already have licenses for office 2003

salesman: well that might work on vista, altho I'm not sure

At this point both me and my bro don't know whether to laugh at this bloke or have a go at him and pull him up on his blatent lies.

my bro: well it would be cheaper for us to just build our own system

salesman: (realises he's out of his depth here) well you could try Dell

We both turn around to get away from this idiot before we floor him.

So now my dads wife is moaning saying about getting a printer (lol) ok, lets go over to the printers :) my dad see's a printer he bought last week for £75 in there on sale for £165. Finally they realise what I was saying all along.

I just cannot believe people are so dumb. If I wasn't there they would have undoubtedly bought a pc + printer + maybe office 2003 (which they have already). My dads wife phoned her boss/business partner and he said he spent £800 in pcworld for his pc

Anyway, I'm pretty sure everyone knows how crap pcworld is, but that just really really annoyed me.

I think the cheapest core2duo system (a E2140) in there was £550 and it only had a 17" TFT and 512mb of RAM (they were charging £100 more for the same system with 1gb of RAM).

On Dell I found a core2duo E4300 + 1gb RAM + 19" TFT for £250+VAT

They make their money out of people who don't know better. It's a sad fact :(

And to think they are actually going to be stocking OCZ products soon... :(

I know exactly how you feel...me and my "tech friends" (not nerds :p) like to go in there and just haress them...

Its past a joke how little these guys know! Perhaps if I went to work there I'd be put head of tech support just for knowing the difference between PC1 and PC2?

I think you could make a good tv program going around the country to different pcworld's filming the salesmen.

PC World makes me so angry. Its not just the dumb salesman, its the bloody annoying adverts.

I want to work at PC world soon, I could teach the whole group a thing or two. :)

it does annoy me that they are left to advise the less knowledgible people. Yet they seem not to be that far in front of there customers.

Lets set the documentary up on how crap pc world are!!!!! They have docs for the rogue traders, why not pc world!

I applied for a job but they wouldnt give me it so did my friend, he got a reply saying he was over qualified :S wtf..!!! n00bssssss.... They dont want to be shown up by 16 year olds.. F******..

I got the same.

I knew more & had more experience than the bloke doing the interview. They tried getting my to agree to get paid the shelf stacker wage, but do the support. Then they decided I was over-qualified.

I would have a chat with them about that.. at least complain.. :)

They are complete idiots.. They really have no idea about pc's, My mum wanted to buy a computer for my brother but she wouldnt let me build him one (this was when i was 14) :S dont know why, so anyway we went into PC world and to the PC sections.

Salesman: Hello there can i help you

Me:NO

My mum: yes, actually we are looking for a computer for my son

Salesman: what will it used for?

My mum: General Boy stuff, Games etc.

Salesman: Well i recommend this (shows us a laptop)

My mum: we want a desktop

Salesman: Ok how about this uses the latest GFX cards from Nvidia a 6200 TC, it has 256MB of memory with and it turbo cached meaning it faster.

Me: Do you have anything faster? say an 6800GT?

Salesman: (going bright red) No im sorry this is the fastest we have in at the moment

My mum: O so this isnt the fastest nvidia card then?

Salesman: erm.. erm.. ill leave u to have a look around then, ask if you need any help.

My mum: I dont think we will (walks out)

I couldnt stop laughing at his face..

i went there to look at laptops with the wife as she wanted a laptop so we could accualy look at the laptop as my wife is very picky anyway i asked about upgrading the ram for me they wouldnt fit it for free and said the warrenty wud be void if i did it even tho there is no sticker on the botoom of the laptop ram area... he said they would know as there would be scratches on the ram sticks i started laffing and then arguing with the bloke a complete waste of time

i remember a dude going into the hardware section where the motherboards cpu's and ram and suchlike are (in the p4 athlon days) and asking one the repair techy's which cpu would go with the motherboard he had on his list on paper..., the techy looked completely out of his depth, and offered an athlon chip for a p4 motherboard along with some SD ram for a DDR motherboard. i was trying SO hard not to go up to the guy and tell him he was A) being ripped off and B) that this trusted techy didn't have a god damn clue.

and they have the gaul to ask for money to get ram fitted?! or anything else for that matter

since when does dual boot void warranty?

and installing ram in a computer won't void warranty either its a self service thing?

PC World staff are a bunch of Muppets (one or two exceptions, the ones that left :D )

I Will admit to going into my local store to pick up a REAL bargain Generally ignoring the staff.

Im not trying to defend PC world, but i do have some points. Well, first of all PC World doesnt want to employ anyone younger than 18 since the job (salesman or customer advisers, doesnt matter) includes handling very large amounts of money.

PS. not all staff is dumb like carrots in PC World, myself i dont think i could mix up socket A (462) and socket 478 or 775, and offer SD ram over DDR SDRAM when motherboard only supports DDR. Anyway i just want to say that not all staff is that dumb. but i do realize that we have many assistants which know nothing about pc parts or how they work. Thats why we have special training courses for them but they dont seem to care about that too much.

Plus, about overcharging, i agree shopping at PC World is a rip off, but then when it comes to complete n00bs which have never had a PC before, try telling them what is THE internet and how to shop there. Or explaining why Core 2 Duo cpus are generally faster even the clock speed is lower than older Pentiums with clock speeds over 3ghz. Or explaining people what is and how to set up a router (thats the most common one, totally drives me mad).

lol :)

The majority of the people in pcworld are under 18 (most are school leavers being paid minimum wage).

Most of the 'technical' staff have no idea and also have little/no experience

The 'salesmen' know nothing and shouldn't be selling something they don't understand.

I was 20 when I went to the interview where they said I was over qualified, as I had 4years experience of actually being a computer engineer on the road.

I know someone who was a computer engineer at a pcworld and he knew nothing about hardware. He downgraded his GPU from a geforce4Ti to a 5200 as he thought the 5200 was better.
