Patriot Viper 6gb XMP or no XMP.

Been looking at my ram lately http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-008-PA and i noticed that i have the XMP setting on my BIOS. Only problem is im not 100% on what this does exactly apart from an easy 1 click setup. I have my i7 920 OC to 4.01Ghz and currently have manualy set the Ram to a 2:8 ratio @ 1528Mhz to match the CPU.

Now when i try to run the XMP setting and reboot my comp wont boot past the windows loading screen and then it BSOD's. I rang the customer support from Overclockers and they say that the ram is ok to run on my standard 1528Mhz and dont worry about the XMP. Is this normal for the ram or is it broken. I have a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R motherboard if thats the issue.

Anyway any feedback on the XMP setting would be grand.

Kind regards, Sean.

i have the same mobo cpu and overclock as u do, dont mess with the XMP i find it just messed everything up with major stability issues like you are gettin

Thx for the info dude. I seems its not suited to the motherboard then. But what is it for, and its uses as i cant find to much on the interwebs about it.

And is it classed as RAM or MOBO fail if it dont work ?

All XMP does is set the ram up to work and adjust the cpu abit too.

I NEVER use it for anything but reviews tbh, tbh its there for people who havnt got a scooby 'to get their ram running at rated'

ahh so thats exatly as i thought. All this bull on the intel site just over explains it all. It's simply a easy 1 click oc for ram. great.

Thx Tom once again.

Not OC, just gets the ram running at its rated speed. Think corsair's XMP for the 2000mhz doms is 147bclk with the right divider for 2000mhz.

I however normally run mine at 200bclk with a 10x divider. Once you start getting down and dirty with your overclocking it all makes sense.

yeah thats how i got to my 1528... my 191bclk x 8 divider. but its a shame i cant hit 1600 dead. but i gues the 72mhz is nothing. now i wonder if overclocking the ram to like 1700-1800 is poss without sending the other things like QPI and the bclk OTT.

I'm having some trouble getting my new P6X58D-E to read my Vipers PVT36G1600LLK 6Gb in Win7 - I'm only getting 4Gb and I've tried just about everything I know. Including taking the CPU out and reinstallating the system from scratch. Can anyone shed some light on this topic pls and make my bloody week!

if you have reinstalled windows and its still not seeing all yer ram then one stick is dead IMO take them out and runt them 1 by 1 to fine the dead one

Try switching the slots (1, 3, and 5 -> 2, 4, and 6). I thought I had to RMA my motherboard because my computer was not displaying anything, but I switched the RAM from the blue slots to the white ones and now it works fine.

Annoys me when people give advice and they actually know nothing about what they are talking about.

If the stick was dead it wouldnt boot.

So dont worry it is there, its just windows isnt seeing it. Its a very simple fix too.

First of all does bios see 4gb or 6gb? If its 4gb in bios look for a memory remapping feature.

If bios says 6gb come back and Ill let you know what to do in windows.

you got up on the wrong side of the bed

Hey there I'm finally back from work and ready to start tinkering about with my new PC. thank you Tinytom and AMDFTW for your comments and I've taken both into consideration.

I'm sorry I didn't give you enough facts to work with but I wasn't sure anyone would bother answering so you've proved me wrong.

OK as I said before I've got a P6X58D-E and yes I have seen some complaints about missing RAM in other forums I've been reading through. This however is the best presented one I've seen yet.

OK so basically I've got two sets of RAM sockets to use - 3 Blue and 3 Black

The manual specifically says to use the blue ones for a set of 3 stick setup. Don't worry Tiny I even went so far as to try the alternatives as you suggested but to no avail. What can I say I had to try it to believe it

I've tried and tested each RAM separately and in different slots and it is only when a RAM stick is placed in the third or last slot from my perspective that my computer doesn't boot so I pretty much reckon that this is the one at fault.

AMDFTW suggested that I check BIOS not windows and yet it is the RAM in BIOS I am always referring to. If it didn't appear in Windows I wouldn't be so concerned believe me. I do wish to try that memory remapping feature but I don't see it as an option in my BIOS and yes I have upgraded my BIOS to the lastest version 303 dated 25/6/10. So I'm pretty sure there's no option there unless it's listed under something that's not so obvious to spot.

My BIOS has a MEMOK button I just use it when my BIOS gets frelled after a bad BIOS setting or bad overclock setting.

I've heard of some memory testing programs but I don't know how to run them and I'm not even sure how to test RAM as I've never had problems like this before.

I'm still open to suggestions as OcUK has offered RMA but I'm still feeling optimistic about the issue and think there's a reasonable solution to it.

P.S. I recently tried found a way to get a system review of RAM and CPU from windows7 but my memory lapsed and I couldn't remember where I found it a few minutes later. (getting older I guess!) if any one knows how to access this page which shows and describes exactly which memory slots are being used on Windows7 then please do tell.

Regards,

Brad

i think the memory maping is called something slightly different

but its in there fella

Sorry mate - nothing to indicate memory mapping function in my BIOS - I did however try testing it with Memtest86+ and it seems that there are 3 slots visible. Results were as follows...

Slots 0 2 4 visible however when I looked at their memory mapping only 0 and 2 are present 99% of the time.

This morning I decided to turn on the PC first thing and try another test. To my surprise it actually read the fourth slot and 6135M of RAM where infact visible. Once I reset the PC though it went away and started reading 4088M again

Surely this must mean there's something that's not configured or set right.

What settings have you got the RAM at. I found this problem with a bad overclock on my board. Make sure the sticks have got the right amount of voltage, timings are right and that you are not ocing. It may be worth updating your bios (or downdating it depending if there is a known bad bios out there)

Tried updating BIOS but to no avail. I'm not really sure what setting's the RAM is supposed to be set which is why I'm here in the first place. I let the system choose default. Still the fact that it did work just that once in memtest86+ kind of indicates that it's not a setting but rather some stupid fault in the slot. Then again SPD data is visible and present in all Slots 0,2,4 and their memory maps appear to be identical. It's just that it doesn't add it to memory even after I've set the ceiling to 6135M

Really I'm just about ready to throw in the towel here and send it back to OcUK...
