Patriot Memory announces Solid State Drives (SSD) with capacities up to 256GB

Hard drives with moving parts are seeing their history on the horizon I think. You know that in good time they`ll become bigger, cheaper, faster - they`ll demand a faster bus soon enough I think.

Saying that, tape drives still get used alot. So there is a large spectrum of uses.

If these ssd start refining costs, convential hard drives could be in a sticky situation price-wize.

I never bought a raptor becasue I didn't see the value. 2 years on I realised hdd's are worth spending money on becasue they last so long...

There is still a threshold and even if ssd's became £1/GB that would still be more than I'd want to spend... It will be at least another year before ssd's become an option

So OCZ and Patriot have similar solid state drives cool a few more companies need to jump into the game and we could have some nice price competition going on to help lower prices. ^_^

Aren't SSDs kind of a trade off at the moment now. They perform better with some things but not with others. Unless there are some overall jumps in performance, I still don't see the need for them. Granted, HDDs are getting a TAD old :p but I just don't know if SSDs are really the answer, yet.

Well in desktops not so much but in Laptops they are perfect, less power, less heat, and smaller footprint so this would be perfect for the mobile world. ^_^
