Pair 290 with what GTX card?

I've been looking at either 970 or a 2nd hand 780/Ti. I don't plan on going Multi GPU a la DX12 or anything. What I'm really after is being able to stream to my Shield Tablet or TV when at home or on the go.

I mean sure I could just buy a 10M long HDMI cable for when at home, but I think I'm okay with the delay as this is purely for SP/Console games like Fallout 4 and similar where a controller is decent enough to use without having to resort to violence.

So pretty much any card that matches the 290 in performance with 2GB> VRAM. Waiting for HBM 2.0 is always there, but then I might as well get 2 new cards altogether.

Thoughts? :)

780 Ti and the 970 will both perform equally well and better than a 290. Personally I would go for the 970 for both the extra VRAM and lower power draw.
I assume you mean to replace the 290 as I got a little confused when you mentioned getting 2 cards at the end of the post.

Both wrong. The 780ti is faster than the 970 overall. The Titan black is faster still and both the TI and TB are about 5-7% slower than a 980.

AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB (947MHz GPU, 5GHz memory) (Catalyst 13.12)
Notice how the 290 is on launch drivers in that review. They've also improved the drivers for the 970 since launch as well. The Ti is almost certainly the slowest/second slowest card now.

Maxwell launched on quite mature drivers dude.

So I'll stick with the 780ti having a very slight edge over the 970, driver derping aside :)

So I am wrong for saying both the 780 Ti and the 970 perform equally well and are both better than a 290?

Which part would be wrong?

The 780 Ti and 970 are both good performance cards?

Maybe it was saying they are both better than the 290?

The advice given is sound. You seem to be trying to start something that just isn't there dude. It is not the 1st time this has been noticed recently.

LOL. That's fannytastic.

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I plan on using the 290 for games as I have, and the (upcoming) GTX 7XX/9XX for when on the go or playing on the big screen, or perhaps any other game that might favor the Nvidia card, hence why I prefer something that equals the 290 (1080p gaming in a sense).

"Both" are going in a custom loop soon enough which is why I want another card ASAP. This will serve as an all around gaming /media rig for when at home or on the go. When I move over to HBM 2.0 I might as well jump to DDR4 and everything else, but this rig and her parts are staying either way.

I gave up my server in favor of other things (like mentioned above) so I'll have to build a 2nd rig, but that one will serve a different purpose.

new 970 over 2nd hand 780ti. ignore the 3.5 ram issue if you are on 1080p, i've been using mine for about 6 months and had no problems. Also new= Warranty, this is a big deal if things go wrong. Only thing i would say is the 970's are prone to coil whine.
