overclocking without k?

for intel platforms, when overclocking, why is it so bad to do it without a k edition (not usin the bus multiplier) how much can you overclock without the k what will happen if you go to far and why will it happen?

It's known as base clock on those generations, and it can't be raised more than a few increments without creating instability. Therefore, you need an unlocked multiplier to OC.

you raise the bclk as mentioned before, but it gets unstable and you cant squeeze a whole lot out of it. a friend of mine tried it and fried his ram...

From what I recall the main reason you can't touch the bclck is down to what's strapped to it, most importantly the PCIE lanes.

Overclocking the FSB on Sandy/Ivy is a sure fire way to quickly kill the CPU. From what I hear you're lucky to get 3mhz out of it.
