Overclocking Maximus IV Extreme-Z

Just bought myself a new PC;

Asus Maximus IV Extreme-z Mobo, Intel i7 2600k cpu, 8gb Ripjaws-X 2133mhz DDR3 ram, all in a HAF-X full tower.

...got a MSI GeForce GTX 580 Lightning Xtreme Edition 3GB GDDR5 PCI-E gpu in the mail, but its not here yet.

Would like to know if anyone has the same setup, if not, what values are safe to set for overclocking, I don't want it crazy overclocked, just a fair performance boost.

so you want to overclock 1155 few steps that you should always do in my opinion

1. Internal PLL voltage ON

2. Spread Spectrum OFF

3. never go over the VCore maximum 1.38-1.4V for 24/7

4. Set memory @ rated timings

now how you overclock:

leave the bclk @ 100.... change your multiplier to whatever you want e.g. 47 for a 4.7ghz OC 44 for a 4.4Ghz OC

voila

most people go for a 4.4-4.8 overclock but then it depends on what your chip wants too do e.g. my chip will do 5 ghz with ease but its keeping the heat away that really matters

final question... what cpu cooler r u usin

Nothing for cooling at all but the stock Fans in my HAF X Case... They push a lot of air but I'm new to overclocking, so i never really thought about a CPU cooler. My main concern for now before I buy into CPU coolers and such, is just a bit of an overclock, cause I've got 2 of those MSI gtx 580 lightning extreme edition 3gb GPU's now, so gaming isn't really gonna suffer so much

Just wanted an overall performance boost for everyday shit, you know? But I still wanna know anything you wanna tell me about it, this is gonna be a learning curve for me!

Yea... Like I stated, never overclocked a PC before, therefore never needed/ or even thought of a CPU Cooler... Any suggestions? Don't want to go water cooler way, I'm not gonna overclock my shit so much that it'll get that hot.

I'm hope you mean you are just using the cooler that came with the retail 2600k, Because if you don't have a CPU cooler at all you risk burning out the CPU or worse.

For a beginner I recommend a corsair h100 or h80. They sit in between air and water cooling and are reasonably easy to fit. Plus they don't cover half your motherboard like some of the air coolers.

For overclocking I'd recommend installing all the software and utilities from the ASUS website, going into the AI Suite and using the auto tuning to let it find a safe overclock up to a max of 4.5GHz any higher and you want to spend some time learning to overclock and doing it yourself.

Hope that helps

Yea, I meant the stock cooler is in, but I haven't purchased any aftermarket cooling for the CPU, and that does help, thanks!

I wouldn't consider the H100 for beginners. Maybe in the water cooling field as a whole, but it sure as hell is not beginner cooler. It's already been proven to beat the Noctua NH-D14.

I was looking into the Noctua NH-D14, But that shit is GIGANTIC

Is that kind of weight alright to have just hanging over your mobo, pulling it down? Keep in mind the SLI video cards are already huge and weigh tons. I don't want it to get all messed from warping or having my can just waiting to tip over from being off-balance. But on the whole, I don't really need a cooler like that anyways, cause I don't wanna overclock my PC that hot anyway. Which is also why I don't wanna go water cooling, the hassle of having to refill resevoirs, or spending the kind of cash for the kind that don't need refilling, its just ludicrous, air/fan cooling is fine with me.

I appreciate all the help, keep it coming.

Get the H100. It performs better than the D14 does. and it's an enclosed loop.
