Overclocking GTX 280

Hey all,

I'm getting a couple of GTX 280's in a couple of days.

Has any1 tried to OC one?

Just wondering what gains have been achieved.

It does seem that you can get near 100mhz gain over vanilla on the core.

Its the age old question, will a vanilla clock past a factory OC.

The price difference is 30 per card from vanilla to XXX. but that is 60 i could spend on other shiny things.

They'll be on water so i'm thinking of getting some good OC'n out of them.

Vanilla will almost always hit and go past the factory overclocked speed as these companies still get the same chip.. they just overclock it through the firmware. ;)

i'm thinking, get a vanilla XFX then shoot for the XXX clocks with a tuner then flash to keep those settings.

At least for those who dont know how to OC the pricing is no longer extortionate.

I saw a youtube video comparing the pre-overclocked to standard models, with similar clocks as the pre-overclocked version, the standard literally failed and was binned :/ (red light)

I have happily got a 650MHz clock out of my pair of 280s, I probably could take it up higher, but I can't tell the difference, even in Crysis. It did blue screen once but that may have been due to a low Vcore on the CPU
